2005 Week 12

November 23, 2005

As we wind down this year's college football schedule in late November, we should all give thanks.

I'm personally thankful that we've had such a great season. I was dozing on and off very late on Saturday but got to see the end of that fantastic game between USC and FSU. The President's son-in-law Reggie ran up more yardage that Alabama gets in a month. And the Noles fought hard, down to the wire. You gotta love matchups like that one.

Apparently that game is part of a trend of more intersectional games in November. I was pretty impressed that Harvard threw caution to the wind and hopped a plane to fly west for their "big game". I love seeing the crimson go up against those light blue uniforms and the big "Y" helmet. The BYU Stormin Mormons gave Harvard all they wanted, falling in triple overtime.

But what's best about this time of year are all the classic rivalries and the clever nicknames associated with the games.

Of course the most famous named rivalry played last weekend was the Alabama vs. Auburn battle for the famous medical device, the "Iron Bowel".

In South Bend, Notre Dame knocked off Syracuse in the "Clash of the Really Lame Mascots".

Penn State defeated Michigan State and took home the Hugh Grant Trophy.

Vanderbilt shocked Tennessee, which means there's soon to be a lucky winner in the Fulmer Unemployment Pool.

LSU stomped Mississippi and took possession of the Golden Tooth.

And, in perhaps the biggest game of the day, Michigan hosted Ohio State in the battle for the rights to Toledo. The Buckeyes won the game, so Michigan gets stuck with Toledo for another year.

Well, I'm off to Ma's to stuff a couple turkeys. We may even cook them. Talk to you next week.
