2007 Week 14
December 6, 2007
We're finally nearing the end of the regular season and I for one have thought it's been a fantastic year. We've had upsets galore, exciting conference races, and some of the most insightful color commentary from folks like Bill Curry, Dan Fouts, and Chris Spellman. Hey, Chris, whatever happened to your brother Alonzo?
By the way, speaking of ESPN guys, I miss the Pony. Has anyone seen the Pony?
There's been a lot of talk in recent years about playoffs and a lot more talk about conference championships. So I was excited to watch last weekend and see some of these basketball style conference tournaments get underway.
The Pac-8 started things off, with their semi-final games. The Oregon State Ducks pounded the Beavers, Stanford nipped Cal, and Southern Cal won the Cheerleader Bowel. It should be interesting to watch those three teams in the conference finals.
The ACC has been wise enough to expand in recent years, and Virginia Tech, Louisville, and Central Florida State all moved on to the finals.
Other conferences had already gotten to their final round. In a game that everyone was looking forward to, Oklahoma blew out #1 Missouri to claim the Big Eight title.
Some big programs have once again fallen on hard times. I tuned in the MAC championship game last Saturday morning and watched as Semen U trounced the once proud Hurricanes of Miami. I told those Miami folks that dropping from the SEC to an easier league wouldn't be a good move.
Of course the game that mattered most to me was Saturday night's Backwoods Brawl, as my Pitt Panthers made the Western Virginia Mountain Men squeal like Barney Rubble's special friend Ned Betty. I just wish Johnny had been alive to see the big win.
I'll be going underground (to my wine cellar) for a couple weeks as I prepare my annual Bowel Preview. Who knows what sort of crap I'll dig up. See you soon.
