2007 Week 5

October 4, 2007

I kind of like this part of the season, when ESPN decides to shows college football just about every night so I don't accidentally tune in a baseball game or something.

You folks may recall back in 1981 when the hostages came home from Iran and were given lifetime passes to major league baseball games. I famously remarked "haven't they suffered enough?"

Soon after that I got a friendly visit from Greg Luzinski and his Louisville Slugger. I must say I've gotten a lot of use out of my colostomy bag ever since.

One of the surprise teams this year is the University of Kentucky, led by quarterback Andrew Woodson. You gotta love that kid's bloodlines, being the love child of Rod and Charles Woodson. I predict he will win two Heiman Trophies and a Pulitzer Prize.

Auburn went down to Florida Field and laid a hurting on the Gators with an upset win.

Now I'm still a bit unsure about these overtime rules. Many of you have told me that each team gets one chance in overtime. Yet when I watched the end of the game, I saw Auburn getting to try a field goal and making it. They cut to Coach Spurrier for his reaction and he looked pretty agitated, so I figured it was one of those sudden death deals.

But then they lined up again and I assumed Florida was being given a chance to tie the game with a field goal. Instead Auburn got to try another field goal, while Florida didn't even get a chance. Auburn made both kicks and won the game. That doesn't seem too fair.

The team I really respected last week for their effort was the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. They drove to East Lafayette Indiana to play Purdue and lost a tough game. Then they headed home that evening for the second game of their doubleheader, breaking out their famous blue jerseys with the gold helmets, for a game against Southern Cal.

The announcers noted that the Irish were wearing these blue jerseys in honor of their 1960 national championship team, which surprised me, because I figured that Alabama and Michigan have claimed a piece of just about every national title since 1912.

I will say I was impressed with the new upper deck at Notre Dame Stadium, especially how full it was, and the big lake they dug out by the stadium looks beautiful.

Irish Coach Charles White passed on the opportunity to coach in this game as he would have been going up against his former school, USC. Coach White was recognized with a big purple "W" in the middle of the field. Instead of Coach White, Notre Dame was kind enough to bring former coach Ty Dillingham out of retirement to lead them for the game. Coach Dillingham did a fine job against the mighty Trojans, leading Notre Dame to a narrow loss.

I wish other schools would bring back past coaches for these special kinds of games. Wouldn't it be great to see Miami led onto the field by that pork-faced Satan? Or, speaking of our Dark Lord, wouldn't you love to have LSU under returned mentor Nick Satan preparing for this Saturday's big game against Alabama? I know I would. NATAS.
