2011 Week 9
November 3, 2011
November has begun and with it the exciting run of nightly MAC games. A couple nights ago it was the Toledo Mud Rockets losing a close 63-60 game against Northern Illinois. Then last night it was a tight low-scoring game between Temple and Ohio U. I've always been a fan of Temple coach Lon Chaney's zone defense, maybe he can hold a clinic for the Toledo hoopsters. When is the great Hawaiian shootout?
I was very glad to see JoePa get win #409 last weekend, passing the legendary Eddie Robinson on the all-time wins list. The players tried to carry him off the field but were pretty worn out by the time they got up to the press box.
There were a lot of crossover games over the weekend, especially between the Big Ten and the new Big 12 conference. The Michigan State Fighting Chippewas went to Lincoln and got knocked off by the Nebraska Cornholio. Meanwhile Texas Tech will have a newfound respect for the Big Ten after getting pounded by Iowa State.
In regular Big Ten action, Ohio State had an exciting last-minute win over Wisconsin. I'm not saying that the Badger defense messed up by leaving an OSU receiver wide open, but perhaps next time they won't have their safeties playing Hackysack in the end zone. Minnesota had an upset victory over Iowa and secured the farming services of Floyd Rosedale for yet another year.
One of the more exciting finishes occurred at the Coliseum, as Stanford pulled out an overtime win over USC. Now I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules. Stanford scored and went for two. Then USC was going in to score but fumbled and Stanford recovered and ran out the clock and USC never got a chance to score.
The World's Second Largest Cocktail party resulted in a Georgia win over Florida. The largest one will occur when the Juggs visit my basement bar in Pittsburgh. Speaking of Pitt, they had a blowout win over the Canucks from Yukon.
Houston also had a huge win over crosstown rival Rice and their quarterback once again threw a bunch of touchdown passes. I haven't seen a Cougar score that much since Kathie Lee Gifford's visit to ESPN studios.
The University of Colorado is having a rough transition to their new league. The Buffaloes are 1-8. They got pounded by Arizona State and are in last place in the WAC. Coach McCartney has lost his mojo ever since his daughter Jenny McCartney entered a convent.
The fighting Irish ended a lengthy losing streak to Navy with a six touchdown win. But the biggest news for Notre Dame occurred off the field, as some of the players got in the Internets to question Coach B Kelly and some of his habits. Personally I grew up with the Bear trying to kill his Texas A&M Longhorn boys in the desert and Woody Hayes punching every player in sight, so I don't care if some wrapper turned coach like B Kelly decides to use his players as a personal toilet.
Now due to the mature nature of B Kelly's habits the ND players apparently chose to discuss the incidents on an adult site designed for such risque matters, I guess it's called Twatter.
Well, this week I'm getting fully prepared for the big LSU vs. Alabama showdown. I've got my TV, my remote, my Stoli drip, my fridge, and a dozen Depends. Talk to you next week.
