2015 Week 10

November 17, 2015

We're now seeing a lot of these conference races getting closer to being decided.

In one of my favorite rivalry games, the undefeated Iowa Huckeyes held off the Minnesota Golden Buffaloes, 40-35. With that win Iowa claimed possession of, for another year, the farming services of Floyd Rosedale.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Michigan had an exciting overtime win at Indiana, 48-41. I'm still not sure about these overtime rules. The refs let each team run 5 plays in overtime. Indiana ran their 5 plays and they scored one touchdown. Then Michigan ran 5 plays and scored two touchdowns, so the game should have been over then. But for some reason Indiana was allowed to run another 5 plays but came up short and that was that.

The Oklahoma Sooners continued their resurgence as they upset an undefeated Baylor squad 44-34. It's great to see an OU powerhouse that doesn't run the ball all the time, though I'm sure Barry Switzer is rolling over in his grave. Largely because Barry is still alive.

In a fine intersectional game, the Arizona Wildcats upset #10 rated University of Texas at Houston, 37-30. Arizona made a late stop to hang on for the win against U.T.A.H.

In the ACC Virginia Tech was holding on for dear life against Georgia Tech, leading 23-21 late, when a Georgia Tech player committed a dumb penalty that killed the Yellow Jackets' final drive. Coach Beaner had a confused expression on his face at the play, then I realized that was the expression he had the entire game. I don't think that boy is right.

LSU came off a thumping in Tuscaloosa to play regional rival R Kansas and the Hogs let loose all over the Bayou Bengals, winning 31-14.

Two of the more surprising football teams this year met in the Lone Star State, as Houston came from behind to preserve their undefeated season and beat Memphis 35-34. It's nice to see two XFL teams still competing at a high level.

In spite of an early loss at Clemson, the Fighting Irish are looking very solid this year. They had a rather easy win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. But the revelation for me was the Wake Forest mascot. I'm not quite sure why their mascot is President Clinton, he doesn't seem like the ideal Babtist icon.

Some other Presidents were having their annual college football alumni day here up in the heavenly reaches. A surprising number of presidents played college football. So we had Presidents Nixon, Kennedy, Ford, and Eisenhower tossing back a few and also drinking some beers.

President Ford still likes to walk around with his helmet on. He's still pretty stung that President Johnson said he'd played too long without a helmet. President Kennedy had a lot of interesting comments about the cheerleaders and my good friend Erin Andrews. I didn't know that there were so many potential uses for wiffle ball bats.

President Eisenhower talked a lot about his time with the team at West Point, especially because he was on the team that was upset by Notre Dame over 100 years ago, so he's always kind of had it in for the Irish.

But the real entertaining guy was President Nixon. He was drawing up plays and making a lot of jokes, such as "that guy cuts through defenses like he's General Giap!" or "rewind the tape. Then burn it!" He's actually a pretty entertaining guy and he gave me a big bear hug in parting. Only later did I realize my wallet was missing.

Stay tuned next week as it's showdown time in the Big Ten and also time for some cross-state non-conference rivalries between Texas and Oklahoma as Baylor plays Okie State and TCU visits OU.
