2018 Week 11
November 13, 2018
We had more than a few exciting games last weekend as we slowly move toward the end of the conference season, the selection of the teams in the BS playoffs, and my favorite time of the year, bowel season.
I have been really impressed with Syracuse this year and head coach Dino. They left the St Louisville Cardinals in a rubble of pebbles, winning 54-23. Of course this week they get the Fighting Irish so I cringe at the painful thought of somebody bam-bamming the Orange Testicles.
Speaking of Notre Dame, they had an easy win over Florida State, 42-13. I did have to repeatedly adjust my TV set due to the color of the home team's uniforms, eventually I figured out who was on the field once I changed the tint to black lettering on pink jerseys.
Other highly ranked teams were in action against name opponents too. The University of Georgia pulled away from rival Auburn, winning 27-10. Ohio State scored late to beat the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas, 26-6.
In the most exciting finish of the day, Oklahoma held off a late 2-point conversion by Oklahoma State, winning 48-47. I'm still not sure what Coach Mullet was doing on that two-pointer, you'd think he'd know by now that a completed one-hopper doesn't count. This rather overlooked rivalry is known as "Bed-lamb" which is why I think my good friend Coach Corso used to talk about it so much.
Texas hit a late pass to break a tie at beat Texas Tech 41-34. It had to be thrilling to play the game at AT&T Stadium in that shining metropolis Lubbock, I just hope Jerry Jones was there to see the excitement.
A different Texas team, TCU, suffered a tough defeat against Western Virginia, losing 47-10. The Mountain Men look to be the pride of the Big East given that my Pitt Panthers and Penn State have struggled.
There weren't as many rivalry games this past week but Tennessee did beat Kentucky 24-7, in the battle for the Golden Tooth. BYU beat UMass in a classic battle of religions, but we got word that the Man Upstairs wasn't bestowing any favors on the winners, so my apologies to the LSD folks in Salt Lake.
Northwestern had a come from behind win at Iowa to clinch the Big Ten North title. Elsewhere in the league Nebraska ran up the score on Illinois. Coach Smith seems to be struggling and probably wishes he was back working at Ohio State for his friend Coach Meyer.
It's a busy time of year, I noticed on the ticker that Duke beat North Carolina 42-35. I'm glad that ACC teams are starting to score more in basketball. Elsewhere on the hardwood, SMU beat Yukon 62-50.
Pac-8 teams had some interesting contests. Oregon lost 32-25 to the University of Texas at Houston. Meanwhile Cal came from behind to defeat Southern Cal 15-14. The Trojans really seem to be struggling this year and I'm guessing that Coach Kiffin may be moving on soon.
Next week is another interesting weekend for college football. I'd normally say "should be exciting", but it won't be. We'll have the SEC crossover week with various SEC teams beating up on weak foes to get ready for the rivalry matchups over Thanksgiving. So we'll have to suffer patsy games like Alabama bombing the Citadel, Kentucky clobbering Middle Tennessee, Florida wasting Idaho, Auburn blowing out Liberty, and Mississippi State running up the score on R Kansas.
