2019 Week 10
November 6, 2019
We finally are getting into extended weeks of college football and I for one am quite glad to see that. We started off the previous week with Baylor's tight Halloween win over Western Virginia, 17-14. The Mountain Men had a chance to tie the game late but their field goal was blocked so the Bears continue their surprising undefeated season.
Fellow SWC team Southern Methodist wasn't so fortunate. The Mustangs suffered their first defeat at the hands of Memphis 54-48 as vagabond basketball coach Larry Brown couldn't quite get the win over his hoops rival Tim Hardaway.
Notre Dame had a dramatic last minute victory over Virginia Tech as the Irish drove 87 yards in the closing minutes for a 21-20 victory. The drive was capped off by a twisting quarterback draw by the Irish's token Eastern Orthodox player, Ivan Booksky.
At the World's Largest Cocktail Party (outside of my welcome to heaven a few years ago), at the FU Gator's Bowels, Georgia held off a late Florida rally to win 23-17. Elsewhere in the sunshine state Miami had little trouble with one-time archrival Florida State, winning 27-10. I noticed that Florida State is now looking for a new head coach. There are a lot of fine coaches out there who may be available, like that Jimbo guy at Texas A&M.
Purdue won an exciting game against Nebraska, 31-27. I haven't seen such an up and down seesaw event since my youth when I rode a teeter-totter with Fatty Arbuckle.
I'm not sure what's up with Southern Cal. They got hamblasted by Oregon at the Coliseum 56-24. Coach McKay came up to me afterwards and just said "execution".
Mississippi State had a big win over R Kansas, but I have to congratulate R Kansas and their leading tackler, Bumper Pool. That's the best football name since Harry Colon and Lucious Pusey.
The schedule was a little thin this week as many teams scheduled cupcake games. For instance, highly rated Clemson annihilated something called Wofford, 59-14.
It's become pretty common for teams to schedule cupcakes in November just before big games. For example Navy brought in some Canadians and blasted Yukon 56-10. A struggling Boweling Green team got itself better after beating Acorn 35-6.
Indiana is looking to pile up wins too and so had an easy win over Northwestern.
The approach doesn't always work. Alabama-Birmingham was looking for an easy game against a fellow hyphenated school and scheduled its own cupcake. But they ended up losing 30-7 to Tennessee-Knoxville.
This week is the beginning of MACtion, when we get to watch the top teams in the Mid-American conference battle it out on Wednesday nights in front of 3,500 fans. So sit back and enjoy the excitement of mediocre Midwestern football!
