2019 Week 4
September 25, 2019
There were some wild very entertaining games last weekend. Even the non-American teams got in on the action, as the Fighting Frenchmen of La Tech took out the exchange students of Florida International, 43-31. In an even more exciting foreign contest, New Mexico beat cross-province rival New Mexico State, 55-52. I haven't seen so much action south of the border since my final trip to the Juarez donkey show.
Back out east expansion state Appalachian State topped North Carolina 34-31 after blocking a last second field goal attempt. The last major program to suffer a blocked FG loss to the Appy State Mountain Men, Michigan, lost in Madison to Wisconsin, 35-14. The Badgers pounded the Wolverines on both sides of the of scrimmage. I predict two coach of the year awards and an Ascension for Coach Chryst.
The Cal Dirty Hippies wandered into Oxford and held off Ole Southern Miss, 28-20. The Rebels had been stopped just short of the goal line as time was running out so lined up for a quick quarterback sneak, which got stuffed about as badly as my toilet does after I eat Thanksgiving turkey.
Stan Jose State also ventured out of the Golden State to the land of cotton and took down R Kansas, 31-24. Meanwhile, Southern power Georgia fared a little better in the marquee game of the day, holding off a late Notre Dame rally, 23-17. Irish coach and wrapper B Kelly did get the best of Georgia's mascot, let's just say that there's one thing worse than being p'd off and Uga now knows what it is.
In MAC action, Miami held off Seaman U, 17-12. Elsewhere in Ohio, in a rematch of the 2002 national title game, Ohio State had little trouble with regular Miami, winning 76-5. It had to be a tough night for Cane fans.
One MAC team had a very exciting win. Eastern Michigan was trailing by a point with 18 seconds left and Central Connecticut punted from midfield. The EMUs unveiled their "Ypsilanti water tower" punt block. That's where the guy rushing the punter blocks the kick with his manhood. The ball bounced right into his hands, whereupon he ran it in for the winning TD.
It was a tough time in the largest city in the Loan Star State. Tulane won a stunner against the University of Houston. After Houston tied the game with 30 seconds left, Tulane ran a fake kneeldown then threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to win the game. It was probably the worst upset for Oilers fans since that Buffalo AFC playoff game 25 years ago.
Meanwhile, Houston's cross-town rivals lost to USC, 30-23. The University of Texas at Houston had been off to a fine start, but U.T.A.H. always seems to get upset once or twice a season.
Further north in the state we saw the renewal of an old classic as Southern Methodist held off a game Texas Christian rally to win 41-38. Up here we got to see Doak Walker give Sammy Baugh a wedgie in celebration.
The most stunning game of the day was the final one on Saturday. I had pretty much given up on the contest as the fighting Pirates of Washington State were clobbering Cal-Los Angeles, 49-17. But then Coach C Kelly's Bruins put up 50 points in the final 22 minutes and pulled off a 67-63 stunner. I haven't seen so much scoring involving Pullman since Babe Ruth's Hooker Express whistlestop tour.
Next week we have some top-notch matchups, including Virginia at Notre Dame, Southern Cal at Washington, and Towson at Florida. Talk to you soon!
