2019 Week 6

October 9, 2019

Football excitement is really starting to pick up now that we're in October. I enjoyed sitting back, pouring myself a couple mint juleps, and dozing off around 6 p.m. until I was awaken by my good friends Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson screaming about Bo and how he was going to carry Auburn to a comeback win. Now I didn't want to tell them that Coach Bo is no longer with them and was hanging up here with me doing one shot for every Michigan first down in their scintillating 10-3 win over Iowa.

The Gators did hold off Auburn, 24-13, to continue their fine season.

In other SEC action, Georgia went up to Knoxville and UGA mounted Smokey in a very unpleasant way as the Bulldogs won 43-14.

Texas made a long trip out to the Thomas Jefferson State for a non-conference tilt with Western Virginia, and came away with a solid 42-31 victory. Fellow SWC member Baylor continued their resurgence with a 31-12 win against the pride of Missouri, Kansas City State.

Out in the mountain area Arizona had an exciting 35-30 win over Colorado in a game that once again showcased the talents of Golden Tate's son Khalil. I must say Khalil found a good coaching match with the Wildcats as Coach DickRod's offense fits his skills quite well. After all the recent controversy it was nice to see Coach on the sideline in Tucson. He looks quite healthy, with a nice tan.

Miami's great comeback against Virginia Tech came up short. Miami was down 28-0 at one point then got within 35-21, scored, went for 2 to pull within 35-29, then scored again. For some reason Miami went for 2 points again, failed, and the score was tied until a late Va Tech touchdown sealed things.

Oklahoma is rolling along. They fell behind early to Coach Miles then Jalen Hertz went wild and the Sooners won 45-20. I predict Jalen Hertz will win two Heisman Trophies and a PhD in electrical engineering.

My Pitt Panthers are living on the edge, this time they held off Duke 33-30 after a big Blue Devil comeback came up a bit short.

Out West Oregon and Cal had a very unusual defensive battle. I'm not sure what's up but maybe the Beavers didn't want to score with the Cal Dirty Hippies.

I want to issue one correction - I've often referred to Cincinnati as the NFL team in the AFC Central. Turns out there's actually a college team named Cincinnati too and they had a fine win over Central Florida last Friday. I do think it's a little much for Coach Marv to try to handle both an NFL and a college team, but it seems to be working for him, at least at the college level.

Speaking of the NFL, we now get satellite radio up here for some reason. I'm not sure how it works because I thought the satellites pointed downward. So on Sunday I was flipping between stations and I heard my good friend Brent Musberger doing the Oakland vs. Chicago game. Apparently the game was played in London with a 6 p.m. local start, which is good for Brent because he had enough time to get good and loaded at the pubs. You could tell he was having a good time because on Oakland's first TD he said "touchdown Bears!" I'm just disappointed he didn't get to talk college football, there's nothing like hearing Brent chat on about the Iowa Huckeyes.

While this last weekend was a lot of fun, next weekend should be fantastic. We'll have FSU at Clemson, the annual Red River Shootout, USC at Notre Dame, a football game between Texas and Oklahoma in Dallas, Florida at LSU, and Rutgers at Indiana. Should be a great time!
