2020 Week 2

October 6, 2020

Well, we are quickly getting back to normal in college football. The NHL is done, the NBA is thankfully almost done, and I think baseball will stop polluting the airwaves in a couple weeks, so we can focus on what really matters: Who is going to win Conference UFO this season.

My Pitt Panthers seemed to be doing really well until Saturday, when they gave up a late score and lost to North Carolina State 30-29. You'd think this team would have more testicular fortitude given that their coach is known as Nadd Dogg. Once had a dog like that, poor thing's testicles used to drag on the floor. One time I showed a photo of him to my good friend Coach Corso and he said "I wish I could do that". Then he said something about wanting to kiss my dog. At that point I kneed him in the crotch and he said "that's what I meant, if they were lower it wouldn't hurt as much". I don't understand Lee at times.

Bring 'Em Young is looking pretty tough so far, though I'm not sure whether I'm impressed with their 45-14 win over the Fighting Frenchmen of La Tech.

Florida State seems to finally be turning things around, getting ready for their visit to South Bend with a nice come from behind win over Jacksonville. While it wasn't a win over a powerhouse, it's still impressive to beat an AFC team.

Elsewhere in the SEC the Florida Gators had a nice win over USC, 38-24. I guess the Pac-12 will be playing after all. The Fighting Pirates of Mississippi State, fresh off their stunner over LSU last week, laid an egg vs. R Kansas, losing 21-14. I'd say they needed more cowbell but they really don't.

The most impressive win of the day was probably Georgia sticking it to Auburn 27-6. The Tigers couldn't get anything going on offense and the Bulldogs ground out a nice win.

Ole Southern Miss had a nice overtime win at Kentucky, 42-41. Kentucky scored first in overtime but missed the extra point and took a 6-point lead. The old Georgia lineman covering the game said Kentucky needed to hold Ole Southern Miss to a field goal to win the game ,but the joke was on him as the Rebels kicked two field goals and an extra point for the win.

That was a one overtime game. There was a two overtime game between Western Virginia and Baylor. Due to it going to two overtimes there was a two-pointer shootout and WVU scored 3 2-pointers while shutting out Baylor and won 27-21. Usually a shootout involving the Mountain Men results in a lot more blood, especially with that musket their mascot lugs around.

There was also an odd overtime game in Chapel Chestnut Hill, as BC's attempt to tie the game on a 2-pointer failed as UNC intercepted and ran it back, but BC didn't get another chance to tie or win and UNC won the game, 26-22.

In the Lone Star State the Texas is Back bandwagon blew another tire as the Horny Toads of TCU upended the Longhorns 33-31. I'm beginning to think Coach Strong won't make it there. Meanwhile TCU's archrival SMU defeated an unbeaten Memphis team 30-27. Nice win for the Mustangs. By the way, where's the Pony? Has anyone seen the Pony?

Among name programs, Clemson had little trouble with Virginia, but the Oklahoma Sooners lost for the second time already this season, getting defeated by Iowa State 37-30. Coach Stoops must be beside himself. I know my good friend Bud Wilkinson is. Bud was so upset he even said "dagnabit".

Well, we are heading toward the fun part of the year, when the SEC race shapes up, the Southwest Conference's teams that aren't on probation eye bowel berths, and the Big Ten starts practicing. Should be a great few weeks!
