2022 Week 3

September 22, 2022

We are still in the midst of the cupcake part of the schedule although there were some pretty good games last weekend.

On the cupcake front Michigan pounded Yukon back to the Klondike, 59-0. Oklahoma at least played an American team, having little trouble with Nebraska-Omaha, 49-14. And the #1 rated Georgia Bulldogs clobbered South Carolina State, 48-7.

Not all the cupcake games came out as expected. One of the biggest cupcake upsets was the Eastern Michigan Emus 30-21 win in Tempe over the Sun Devils. Immediately after the game the Arizona State president and athletic director fired Coach Herm Pisarcik for fumbling the game away.

In an even bigger surprise, the Southern Illinois Salukis upended Northwestern, 31-24. And Tulane showed some very positive signs with a stunning 17-10 win over Kansas City State. I must say that watching highlights of that game was a challenge - mixing a green wave with all that purple reminds me of what my bathroom was like before I cut back on the tequila.

Oregon hosted Bring 'Em Young and had a surprisingly easy win, 41-20. There was controversy after the game when it was learned that the Oregon student section had chanted something about making whoopie to morons, which means they must have been planning a road trip to Corvallis.

My Pitt Panthers made an unusual road trip to Kalamazoo and pulled away from Western Michigan 34-13. Our rival Penn State made a similar unusual trip, visiting SEC country and pounding Auburn 41-12. Shug Jordan was with me and he was swearing up a storm. Then he said "well, at least I don't have to listen to JoePa giving me crap". And, before you ask, nobody knows where JoePa is. It's a pretty sore subject up here and nobody's talking.

One of the most exciting finishes took place in upstate New York, as Purdue had yet another last-second defeat. The Boilermaker defensive backs were again playing hackysack in the end zone while Syracuse caught the game-winning TD with mere seconds left. It's been a great start to the season for the Orange Testicles.

Texas A&M bounced back from their upset loss to Appalachian State, defeating Miami 17-9. Their new SEC traveling partners, the Longhorns, also had a bounce back win, as Texas beat their IH-35 rivals, UTSA.

One of the more interesting intersectional matchups occurred in Seattle as Washington jumped to an early lead then held off the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas, 39-28. The key to the game was the success of UW's quarterback, Indiana transfer Michael Penix Jr. I haven't seen a Penix penetrate a secondary like that since Fatty Arbuckle's girls' football movie. At least Penix is no longer being held back by the IU D.

Finally, there was a fairly intense matchup in Fayetteville. It's very interesting when a disgraced former coach tries to rebuild at a lower level of coaching then gets his shot at one of the big boys. R Kansas did manage to hold off Missouri State, but it was a great effort by MO State and former St Louisville Cardinals coach Rick Pitino.

Next week we really get into conference play with Clemson vs Wake Forest, Florida vs Tennessee, and Wisconsin vs Ohio State. Also of note is Rhode Island's visit to Pittsburgh, which tells me the Big East is pretty desperate to add members. Talk to you soon!
