2022 Week 8

October 26, 2022

This season is really becoming exciting, with lots of great games. Fortunately we have lots of TVs up here so we can keep up with the action. Unfortunately I did have some trouble tuning in on Saturday.

I wanted to watch the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as they hosted the Runnin' Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas. But I couldn't find the game anywhere. I even called my good friend Curt Gowdy as I figured he'd know where to find an NBC game. But he was out hunting with Steve Irwin. And, no, for you jokesters out there who make Halloween costumes, Steve does not have a stingray sticking out of his chest anymore. They cleaned that up when he got here.

Finally someone said it was on something called Peecock. So I asked around where to find Peecock but nobody knew what channel it was. My new good friend Burt Reynolds said "my old FSU teammate Coach Corso used to like that sort of Peecock action, him and Ned Beatty, too bad Lee hasn't shown up here yet".

Sometimes I don't understand what Burt is talking about.

In the games I did see, there was an exciting weekend of cripple fights. Virginia beat Georgia Tech 16-9 in a field goal shootout. Stanford somehow put together multiple drives in coming from behind against Arizona State, 15-14. Rutgers waited until the last minute to stick one in the IU D, winning 24-17.

And Colorado State, in a true battle of sad sacks, outlasted Hawaii 17-13.

The Ohio State Huckeyes had little trouble against their namesake foes from Iowa City, as they opened a can of whupass in the second half and pounded Iowa 54-10. Iowa's defense once again outscored its offense, of course even Pee Wee Herman scores more often than Iowa's offense.

In a key battle of unbeatens, Clemson came back from a two touchdown deficit to surprise Syracuse, 27-21. The Orange Testicles weren't the only unbeaten to lose - Lane Kiffin's guys from Oxford MS wandered into Death Valley and got rocked by the Bayou Bengals, 45-20. I'm sure LSU coach B Kelly's brother R Kelly was confused whether to root for his brother's team or Ole Southern Piss.

UCLA also fell from the ranks of the unbeaten when they got pounded by Oregon, 45-30. It sure is shaping up as a competitive year in the Pac-8 and it's good to see a solid turnaround by the Beavers.

There was great excitement in the Midlands, as the SWC/Big 8 crossover continued, with Oklahoma State winning a shootout against the Longhorns, 41-34, and TCU overcoming a double-digit deficit for a 38-28 win over Kansas City State.

One of the more overlooked religious wars took place in the Thomas Jefferson State, as Liberty upended Bring 'Em Young, 41-14. I'd say that BEY legend Jim McMahon is rolling over in his grave but apparently he hasn't made it up here yet. Based on the most recent photos you coulda fooled me.

In an exciting intersectional game, Texas A&M came up short against USC. I just hope the Song Girls had a good time.

Finally, my Pitt Panthers continued their up and down season, as their 7-game road winning streak came to an end at Bush Stadium vs. the St Louisville Cardinals. Coach Nard Dogg just isn't ready for those roided up baseball freaks.

The best thing about October this year is 5 weeks of college football action. So we get our bonus next week with exciting matchups like the game for possession of Paul Bunyan's Perineum between Michigan and the MSU Fighting Chippewas. Not to mention the Battle for the Golden Banjo that will be settled when Kentucky visits Tennessee.

But my favorite game will be the annual World's Largest Cocktail Party, where the Florida Gators take on the Georgia Bulldogs. I just wish they'd not give Florida an edge every year by playing the game in their home stadium, the FU Gator Bowel.
