2023 Week 10

November 7, 2023

The best thing about college football is the variety in teams' offenses, defenses, coaches, and cheerleaders. Especially the cheerleaders.

So let's start with my favorites, the Song Girls, and the team they usually cheer for, Southern Cal. They had a wild game against Washington. The teams went back and forth scoring touchdowns like it was a tennis match. Two great quarterbacks and two bad defenses, but the Huskies finally got a stop and won 52-42 in a game featuring over 1,000 yards of offense. The Trojans couldn't contain Penix.

Then we have the Iowa Huckeyes, who beat Northwestern 10-7 in a punt-fest that featured two bad quarterbacks and two bad defenses. For some reason the game was played at Wrigley Field. My good friend Leo Durocher wandered by and said "hell, Beeno, at Wrigley we'd usually have a 10-7 score in the third inning". That's how bad Iowa games are, even baseball games are more exciting.

We also got into the first week of MACtion. There were many exciting games, with Acorn beating Kent State 31-27, Boweling Green topping Ball State 24-21, and, in a snowstorm, Seaman U beating Northern Illinois 37-31. Gotta love the midshipmen doing well in their new league.

I was sad to see the final matchup in the "Bed Lamb" series, as host Oklahoma State held off Oklahoma 27-24. Oklahoma will head to the SEC next year, which is bad news for the rest of the Big 8. I must admit to being impressed with how well Sooners' quarterback Dylan Gabriel has played. His grandfathers Roman Gabriel and Robert Zimmerman must be proud.

My Pitt Panthers continued a tough year with one of their better performances of the season; they hung tough with Florida State until halftime then FSU pulled away to win 24-7.

Ole Southern Piss had a tight high scoring game against Texas A&M and won 38-35. Elsewhere down south Georgia took on high rated Missouri and prevailed 30-21. The Bulldogs look to be well on their way to another BS playoff appearance.

Meanwhile SEC rival Alabama pulled away from the Bayou Bengal, winning 42-28 after knocking star LSU quarterback J D Daniels from the game with what looked like a cheap shot to the head. Normally I'd expect better from the Tide and their coach, but there's a reason coach Nick is named for Beelezebub.

We had a couple really exciting overtime games. Texas went to overtime with Kansas City State. After Texas kicked a field goal to take the lead, KCSU decided to go for the win on fourth down at the 4 and failed. R Kansas pulled off a win over Florida after an epic screwup by the Gators in the closing seconds of regulation where they tried to run their field goal team onto the field while the offense was still out there. I haven't seen so many blue tinged helmets in one place since the 2016 Zach Smith Ohio Cock Ring Festival.

Next week we have some major matchups, like the Tennessee Vols visiting the Missouri Tigers, the USC Trojans at the Oregon Beavers, and the Penn State Nittany Lions hosting the Michigan Coachless Wonders. Should be great!
