Coach Stagg in Europe

October 13, 2011

Back when I was a kid you wouldn't see games against Canuckian and Mexican teams like Yukon and New Mexico. Coaches like Anus Alonzo Stagg would usually take their teams around the Midwest and occasionally out East.

One time Coach Stagg did take U-Chicago over to Europe to play some exhibition games and, as a young SID, I was fortunate enough to accompany the team. We were told that the European style of football involved a major focus on the trenches, but we were shocked at how violent the game was in the trenches.

We finally realized that it was time to high-tail it out of there as guns were going off all around us. I didn't think we'd have a chance to escape, but my escargot dinner didn't agree with me and I had some really bad bloating. I finally let loose, our pursuers fell over coughing, and we got away.

That's how mustard gas was invented. And now you know the rest of the story.
