2004 Week 11
November 17, 2004
Well, I'm finally recovering from a long stretch of college football action. When ESPN announced that they were going to show 19 straight days of football, I was fired up as can be. But I'm glad to finally get a break from the action--there's only so much Stoli one can take. I'm not a young man of 70 anymore.
Last weekend featured the top-10 matchup of Auburn and Georgia. I've never heard as much noise at Jordan-Denny Stadium as there was last Saturday when the Tigers roasted UGA alive. I'm gonna miss that doggie.
I also enjoyed watching my Pitt Panthers win a thriller in South Bend. I'm still not sure on these overtime rules though. Pitt kicked a field goal and the game was over. Apparently this was one of those sudden death games, at least it looked like sudden death for any contract extension for Coach Dillingham.
Another big game was Florida's blowout win over USC. Coach Holtz is struggling trying to follow in John Robinson and Jim McKay's footsteps.
Oklahoma dominated Nebraska in the Big 8 title showdown. I don't know what's happened to Coach Osborn's teams of late. As Coach Hayes used to say, when you throw the ball all the time three things can happen and two of them result in getting slugged by your coach.
Speaking of the Buckeyes, Marcy Clarett has made more accusations. First he was claiming he got money from car dealers and cushy summer jobs. Then he said he got bogus grades in his classes.
Last week Clarett claimed that Ohio State actually paid money to cover his tuition costs. Then Marcy said his former teammate Mark Cooper used to introduce Marcy to girls who would do all sorts of interesting things that guys like me have to pay top dollar for.
I'm quite shocked that Coach Cooper's son would be involved in something nefarious like this. I'd like to know if Mark could send any of these girls over to Pittsburgh. Preferably one who looks like my good friend Linda Cohn.
In other big games, Boston College welcomed Western Virginia to the ACC by showing them what ACC football is all about. Michigan State quarterback Drew Henson came back from his 2-game suspension to throw several bombs to MSU wide receivers in the Chippewas' blowout win over Wisconsin. Texas A&M knocked off Texas Tech and Coach Knight. Gig 'em Horns! And Iowa bested Minnesota and won back the rights to the farming services of Floyd Rosedale.
This Saturday we'll see a lot of other big rivalry games. The Auburn/Alabama matchup for the Iron Bowel, the BYU/Utah battle for the V-necked White Tee-shirt, and the Indiana/Purdue showdown, where they'll play for the rights to use the Old Oaken Outhouse. I know I'm looking forward to it, though my liver might want to take another few weeks off.
