2004 Week 9
November 2, 2004
I was pretty shocked at watching all the Florida teams lose last weekend. I don't know what's the matter in the Sunshine State. My guess is that all those hurricanes rampaging through the state probably caused a lot of damage, particularly Hurricanes like Willie Williams.
Miami must be glad that they joined the SEC South after that non-conference loss to the ACC's Tar Heals. I'm sure that the Canes wish they still had their star QB Ben Roth, who apparently transferred to Pitt.
Florida State is probably also having second thoughts about not jumping to the ACC after their tough loss to Georgia in the "Jim Beam Sponsors the World's Largest Cocktail Party" battle at the Florida Gator's Bowels in Jacksonville.
My good friend Jim Beam is not the only firm seeking to sponsor games. There was some publicity last week about a sponsor for the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry. Even though that game is slated for an ABC telecast, the OSU/Michigan game was going to be sponsored by CBS.
I think this trend will start to spread. It wouldn't surprise me to watch the FSU vs Miami Florida Bail Bondsmen Association Rumble. How about the Colgate-Palmolive Pitt/West Virginia Backyard Brawl? Or the Deering Banjos Tennessee Kentucky Showdown?
Last Saturday in the Tubervile Bowel, Auburn beat Old Miss and now has to keep Tommy for another year. In a great West Coast matchup, California upended Arizona State, upholding the Pac-8's pride against Tucson's finest.
The best game of the week was probably the Michigan vs. Michigan State tilt, which ended as a 45-37 triple overtime thriller.
I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules. Michigan scored first, then Michigan State scored twice, so I thought the game was over and the Chippewas had won. Then Michigan scored three times on touchdown passes, yet they only gave Michigan State one chance to even things up, and the game was then declared over.
While Adrian Peters is the finest freshman running back around, that guy at Michigan, Leon Michael Hart III, isn't too bad himself. I just want to know why Ty Dillingham wasn't able to recruit Notre Dame legend Leon Hart's grandson to play for the Irish. Also, why is this Leon allowed to do Budweiser commercials while he's still in college?
I'd like to close with an important statement about this very important day. We've all been looking forward to this decision day of November 2nd. While there are many places in America where various bitter contests will play out, perhaps the tightest contest will be in the great state of Ohio. So be sure to tune in tonight for the coverage.
My personal prediction in this most important of battles? Miami 27, Toledo 21.
