2009 Week 2

September 17, 2009

I'm glad that college football has finally gotten underway. Now if only baseball would wrap up in the next week or so, then I could enjoy the rest of the year.

Perhaps the strangest game was North Carolina's visit up to the land of Jack London to play Yukon. Now I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules. After the regulation ended in a 10-10 tie, the Tar Heels scored two points in overtime to win 12-10.

I called my good friend Lee Corso to ask how you could score twice up in Dawson City. He said get a prescription for ED, stop by Madame Ovary's Saloon, and ask for Jodi.

I really don't understand Lee at times. I asked him again, saying I was talking a football game up in Canada, not some bartender with a girl's name. He said "oh, now I get what you're saying, Beeno. They have this thing up in Canadian football called a rouge, it's worth one point".

Now the only rouge I know about is the rouge they splatter on my neck before I go on ESPN. These Canadians sure have funny ways of doing things.

Speaking of Lee and ESPN, I saw him on TV the other day. I thought it was in my contract that I'm the only guy allowed to go on ESPN with a sagging face.

The Michigan State Fighting Chippewas fell to the Midshipmen of Seaman U. Apparently Navy has joined the Big Ten and are 1-1 after losing the opener in Columbus. Again, these overtime rules are perplexing. The Middies scored a touchdown and missed the two-pointer, but got another try and kicked a field goal. It was surprising that the Michigan State boys didn't get an equal shot to lick the Seamen.

In other action, the new powers in the Lone Star State did quite well. The University of Texas at Houston is off to another fine start, as UTAH beat Stan Jose State. And Texas Tech went on the road to New England and knocked off Rhode Island Continuing Education.

Another interesting score last Saturday was Pittsburgh's big 54-27 win over Buffalo. I'm not sure why the pros were playing on Saturday. I also saw that Florida State beat Jacksonville, so I guess Bobby finally formalized what we kind of knew all along and took the Noles to the NFL.

Those who have read my column over the years know that I've harped on this whole split squad approach. For a long time I've wondered why Miami would send out two teams to play two separate games. Some years they were good enough to win both contests. But now I see they've wised up -- they just sent their squad up from Coral Gables to the blue turf in Idaho. They lost a tough one, 48-0, but it would have been worse if they'd only sent half their squad.

So I'm surprised at TV psycho Diane Carole's husband Pete. I know that, thanks to the Song Girls and other ancillary factors, his team can recruit the best talent in the country. But splitting your squad into three teams? Isn't that a bit overconfident?

The main team won their league opener up at Oregon State, coming back to slap the Ducks 18-15. But their second fought well yet lost, as Georgia beat USC 41-37. And their third string went to Florida and the Gators bombed the Men of Troy, 56-6. That split squad approach isn't going to work in the BS system, Coach.

I wanted to close with a correction. Last week I stated that Syracuse quarterback Greg Powlus is the son of Notre Dame legend Ron Powlus. I was wrong. Greg is the brother of North Carolina quarterback Mike Powlus, which makes him the nephew of Mike's father Ron Powlus. I apologize for the error.
