2011 Week 14
December 7, 2011
That was an exciting close to the regular season, with all the conference championship games.
Wisconsin had a come from behind win over the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas to, in the words of Coach Brewster, win the "first inaugural Big 12 championship". I'm still not sure about some of these overtime rules. In overtime both teams punted but Wisconsin won, apparently because they had the lead at the end of regulation.
Oregon destroyed UCLA to win the Pac-8 championship. Coach Neuheisel has always looked like he was afraid of beavers.
Oklahoma State bombed their cross-state rival to win the Big 8 title game. Coach Pickens should be proud of his team.
Baylor knocked off Texas to win the first Southwest Conference championship game. Western Virginia had a tight win over Southern Florida to take the Big East title.
One of the stranger games was the SEC runner-up bowel between Houston and Ole Southern Miss. I wasn't aware that Houston had joined the league, but the game brought back bad memories of the old NFL "Playoff Bowel", where the 3rd and 4th place teams would play a meaningless exhibition in Miami. Houston was just going through the motions in this game and got clubbed.
Speaking of the NFL, as is usually the case in December as the college schedule winds down, some NFL teams played on Saturday. The Steelers had a narrow win over some expansion team from Syracuse, while the Bengals had a tight victory over the Grey Cup champions from Yukon.
In the SEC title game, LSU came from behind to pound Bulldogs into a Vick-like submission. Obviously the most exciting player of the last two weeks has been former USC star Clay Matthews' son, Tyrann Matthews, also known as the Honey Badger.
I called my good friend Lee Corso and asked him what he thought of Honey Badger. He said he was a big fan and that he also liked the animal, that his honey badger was a lot of fun. I said, "Coach, are you saying you actually own one of those rodents?" He said "sure, Beeno. They have really thick skin so if you're tripping a lot at home like I do, you can fall on them and they don't even yelp. And they're a very pleasurable animal, they like to bite you right where it counts." I said "where it counts?" He said "yeah, they can nibble you just right and it feels very good".
I really don't understand Lee at times.
Be sure to come back next week, when I'll unveil Beeno's 2011 Bowel Preview. You wouldn't believe some of the crap I've uncovered.
