2013 Week 10

November 6, 2013

One of the great thing about college football is the drama at the end of the game.

The best example of that last week occurred in Lincoln. The Nebraska Cornholio hit on a long tipped touchdown pass to beat Northwestern 27-24. In fact, Northwestern was so shell-shocked by the miracle play that they didn't even take the field for their turn in overtime, even though they only trailed by 3 and would have only needed a field goal to send the game to a second overtime.

In other Midwestern action, over in the Big Ten, the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas crushed their cross-state rivals Michigan, 29-6, sacking their quarterback Denard Gardner numerous times. I haven't seen a sports figure take a pounding like that since Marv Albert.

The weekend's biggest game took place in Tallahassee, as Florida State took control of the SEC South race by blasting Miami 41-14. Redshirt freshman quarterback Jamesis Winston, a multi-sport star, was outstanding in the game. I predict he will win three Heisman trophies, the 2013 National League Cy Young Award, and the Lady Byng Trophy for hockey sportsmanship.

I got pretty excited watching the ESPN crawl when I saw Kentucky was ahead of Alabama by a large margin. But my big toe was blocking part of the screen and I realized Kentucky was in the process of beating Alabama State 48-14. So instead of besting Nick Satan and the great Bama team, the Wildcats merely defeated the Tide's JV team and coach Nick Satan Junior.

Southern Cal continued their turnaround under coach Ogre by going up to Corvallis and whipping on the Ducks 31-14. This week coach rewarded his team with a bunch of In'N'Out burgers. My good friend Lee Corso used to talk to me about that burger franchise, he told me "In and Out is just what I like to do to my burgers". Apparently Lee is really into bulimia to maintain his girlish figure and says the meat tastes better the second time down.

In one of the more interesting smaller school intersectional games, my good friend Phyllis George's alma mater, North Texas, upset Rhode Island Continuing Education, 28-16. That's a tough loss for R.I.C.E.

The World's Largest Cocktail Party saw an exciting ending in the FU Gator Bowel, as the Georgia Bulldogs pulled off the road upset over Florida, 23-20.

I was saddened to hear additional details about Coach Pelini at Florida Atlantic. Apparently he was in trouble not just for the ganja, but also for use of coke. He should have known that people in the south are pretty particular about that stuff and bought Dr Pepper instead.

During the Notre Dame vs. Navy game there was controversy about injuries occurring due to blocking.

Now blocking can be a real problem. My good friend Herb Street used to tell me about his experiences getting blocked after broadcasting the games. Herb told me how he was chatting up my good friend Michele Tafoya and my good friend Chris Berman came along and blocked Herb in the jimmy and walked off with Michele. I guess it must have been pretty close to closing time because he said something like "Chris clock blocked me." I don't understand Herb at times.

The next few days are ones to really look forward to. We've got some highly ranked teams with big showdowns, the Baylor Bears hosting Oklahoma, Stanford hosting the Oregon Beavers, the Tide hosting LSU, and Idaho hosting Old Dominion. Should be great!
