2013 Week 8
October 23, 2013
Well, first off this week I'd like to congratulate my daughter Beth Cook. I saw on the ESPN crawl that Beth Cook pounded Savannah over the weekend. Gotta love some girl on girl action.
The biggest upset of the weekend occurred on Friday, as the University of Central Florida upset the St. Louisville Cardinals, 38-35. That's what the Cardinals get for splitting their squad and playing some exhibition baseball game against the UCLA Dodgers.
In another game with LA ties, Notre Dame held off the University of Southern California. It's unfortunate that the Irish are now scheduling cupcake directional schools.
Bring'em Young went into Houston and pulled off a shocker over the Oilers, 47-46.
One of the other big upsets occurred in the Music City, as the Georgia Bulldogs got flushed by the Vanderbilt Commodes. The SEC North is turning into quite a battle this year, as Missouri took out the FU Gators to remain undefeated.
One of the more exciting games didn't get a lot of attention. The Toledo Mud Rockets splattered the Navy Seamen 45-44 in overtime. Now I'm still confused about these overtime rules. Each team scored a touchdown but apparently they also had a field goal kicking contest to decide things.
A few miles further north in the Great Lakes State, Michigan knocked off Indiana 63-47. The Hoosier offense isn't as high-scoring as in recent years, so Coach Knight must be concerned. And I'm guessing Coach got away from his traditional man-to-man and went zone, which led to major gaps in the IUD and easier scoring.
In the new expanded ACC, Georgia Tech destroyed Syracuse 56-0. I haven't seen an orange man get flogged like that since John Boehner's government shutdown negotiations.
There was yet another SEC evening classic as Ole Southern Miss got a late field goal to defeat highly rated LSU, 27-24. As I've always said, LSU is like Dracula, they suck the most at night.
Of course the biggest game of the weekend took place in Death Valley. Clemson got destroyed by FSU, 51-14. You've got to be impressed with what Coach Hill has done up in Fresno, and what an inspirational idea to play the game in a national park.
One of the other big stories occurred at the high school level. Apparently some school in Texas beat another school 91-0 and a parent of a player on the losing team filed a bullying complaint against the winning school. My new yet very old good friend John Heisman told me "91 points? That's barely a spanking. You have to get to 200 points before one can call it bullying".
This Saturday is October 26th and Tennessee will be playing Alabama because it must be the third Saturday in October. We've also got some great conference games like UCLA vs Oregon, Penn State vs. Ohio State, and South Carolina vs. Missouri. And let's not forget that SWC/Big 8 showdown, with unbeaten Texas Tech traveling to Norman. Should be a great weekend!
