2014 Week 8

October 22, 2014

Some weeks you watch a bunch of college football and it nearly puts you to sleep. Then other weeks it's just one hot diggety dog moment after another. Speaking of which, never get between my good friend Coach Corso and a golden retriever. He used to say their tongues are as sandpapery as cats are. I don't understand Lee at times.

There were a bunch of exciting finishes last week and a few huge upsets. Western Virginia took to the Baylor. I haven't seen a Mountain Man do that much damage to a bunch of bears since Grizzly Adams' Bestiality Festival.

It was a great weekend for the Show Me State as well. Missouri had little trouble with the struggling Florida Gators, winning 42-13. I predict a short tenure for Coach Zook. Mizzou's cross-state rival, Kansas City State, won a stunning 31-30 upset over the Oklahoma Sooners to shake up the Big Eight race. It came down to the wire. Oklahoma missed an extra point, but KC State was penalized, so OU got to try the kick again, but missed. They probably should have gone for two.

U-Cal Los Angeles had a close call up at California, pulling in an end zone interception for a 36-34 victory. Some of these satellite campuses actually have pretty good programs, like Cal-Los Angeles, Wisconsin-Madison, and Tennessee-Knashville.

Teams from the Lone Star state had some mixed results. Tech had little trouble with regular Kansas, winning easily. The TCU Horny Toads bombed Oklahoma State, 42-9. But A&M got destroyed by Alabama, 59-0. I haven't seen a Texan get blown away like that since Lee Harvey Oswald.

The Big Ten had some exciting action as well. Minnesota kicked a late field goal to upend the Purdue Boilermakers, 39-38. Nebraska put it together in an easy win over Northwestern. And the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas blew out the Indiana Hoosiers to retain possession of the Old Brass Spittoon.

The Big Ten does a fine job with trophy games and I do appreciate the people who donated the trophies. Such as the Bunyan Family who provided Paul Bunyan's Ass, the midwesterners who every year donate the farming services of Floyd Rosedale, and those little brown jugs donated by Halle Berry.

The ACC had some exciting action. I was incorrect a couple weeks ago, my Pitt Panthers did not stay in the Big East, instead they have now joined the Atlantic Coast Conference. They held on for a tight win over Virginia Tech. It was a bitter loss for the Cavs.

The ACC is famous for its basketball, but the football can be good too. North Carolina beat Georgia Tech 48-43, which is a pretty high score for the Tar Heels in either sport.

Finally, in the game of the night in the ACC, Florida State narrowly beat Notre Dame, 31-27. The game was decided on a controversial offensive pass interference call that went against the Irish. After the game I heard my good friend Herb Street say that he once tried an offensive pass against someone from Notre Dame but then he got slapped stilly by Tropical Storm Hannah. I don't understand Herb at times.

We're nearing the end of October and I'm looking forward to some great action like Ole Southern Miss at LSU, Ohio State at Penn State, and a cross-sectional game where Southern Cal takes the Song Girls to the University of Texas at Houston. Should be great.
