2015 Week 13
December 8, 2015
We had a fantastic conference championship weekend. You had clashes between some top teams as the regular season is finally coming to an end. We're just 10 days away from the beginning of my favorite time of year, bowel season. Lots of egg nog and greasy turkey and pretty soon you're relaxing on the throne watching hours of matchups between 5-7 teams.
Championship weekend kicked off with the Mid-American championship in Detroit. Wisconsin Green Bay scored on a late Hail Mary to beat the University of Detroit 27-23.
Some other leagues had less dramatic outcomes. In the Conference UFO championship, West Kentucky won the battle of expansion states, defeating South Mississippi 45-28.
In the American Coast Conference undefeated Clemson held off North Carolina 45-37. That game was higher scoring than most ACC basketball games.
In the Georgia High School finals, Georgia State beat Georgia Southern 34-7.
In the Big Ten Michigan State scored late to upend undefeated Iowa, 16-13. For some reason the Big Ten athletic directors ignored the result and voted to send the Huckeyes to the Rose Bowel, relegating the Fighting Chippewas to the Cotton Bowel.
The SEC championship game wasn't as close as the score, as Nick Satan's Alabama team pulled away from Florida, 29-15.
Stanford continued their renaissance with a decisive win over Southern Cal in the Pac-8 title game.
Finally, I'd really like to give the venerable Southwest Conference its due to having a creative approach to championship weekend. I'm sure many of you saw the stunning upset as Texas upended the Baylor Bears, 23-17, in the Southwest Conference title game. That was a great win for the Texas Aggies.
The runner-up game was almost as good, as Houston defeated new league member Temple, 24-13.
But the SWC went even further and had a JV championship too, as R Kansas State beat Texas State 55-12. Congrats to all the winners!
Be sure to come back next week for Beeno's Bowel Preview. We'll poke around and see what little bowel tidbits we can dig out.
