2016 Week 10

November 8, 2016

As usual November brings us to some of the best drama in the college football season.

We were all pretty excited about the matchup of the Crimson Tide and the Bayou Bengals. At first it was a disappointing game, with about as much scoring as you'd see at a Babtist wedding. Then Nick Satan's guys finally broke through against LSU. Meanwhile Coach Ogre's squad played as if they were mired in the Delta Country muck. So Alabama stays at #1 in the BS ratings and LSU will move on to the rest of their schedule.

Having such a great bitter in-conference matchup was quite the contrast to some of the other action. For some reason a bunch of top teams decided to beat up on non-conference patsies.

The Washington State Fighting Pirates invited a WAC team up to Pullman and pulverized Arizona 69-7. THe St. Louisville Cardinals took a baseball bat to the corpse of Boston College's program. I'm guessing the leaders at BC will consider dropping football again.

Even in the one patsy conference matchup the University of Washington had little trouble with the longhairs at Cal, winning 66-27.

But, for the most part, it was non-league poundings. Clemson destroyed the Big East's Syracuse 59-0. Michigan and Ohio State prepared for their showdown by bombing lowly non-conference foes Maryland and Nebraska by a combined 121-6 score.

Hopefully next week we can get back to some meaningful conference action.

One of the more interesting games of the day was played on a neutral site. Navy's ball control offense held off Notre Dame in Jacksonville, 28-27. Notre Dame only had the ball six times. I haven't seen a bunch of Irishmen with so few possessions since the potato famine.

Texas went over to Lubbock and won a high scoring tilt against Texas Tech 45-37 thanks to an end zone interception. Elsewhere in the Southwest Conference, the TCU Horny Toads had little trouble with Baylor, winning 62-22.

Mississippi State pulled the upset of the day, defeating highly rated Texas A&M 35-28. It was a very bitter defeat for the Horns.

My Pitt Panthers stayed close to Miami for a half, but couldn't keep it together and lost 51-28 to the Dolphins. Bring 'Em Young University had more success, beating Cincinnati 20-3. You have to wonder about the future tenure of Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis.

There were some interesting games among the mid-major schools as well. Temple had an easy win over Yukon, 21-0. Old Dominion won at home vs. Marshall.

The pride of Paris, La Tech, had little trouble in Denton, blowing out the Mean Green 45-24. I haven't seen anyone from North Texas get scored on by Frenchmen like that since Phyllis George's date with Gerard Depardieu.

Now because it's November there's been a lot of talk about important events that will finally be resolved today. As usual the focus of attention is on the Midwest, with its array of blue states and red states, and everyone is anxiously holding their breath awaiting tonight's results.

So be sure to tune in for the coverage of tonight's big contests, especially in the suburbs of Cleveland and the medium sized towns in Indiana, as Western Michigan visits Kent State and Eastern Michigan plays in Muncie against Ball State. They should be dandy games.
