2016 Week 3
September 21, 2016
The games were far better this past weekend than they were a week ago. During what is mostly the non-conference part of the schedule you really want to see some marquee matchups.
That doesn't mean there weren't still some stinkers. On Thursday night Houston pulled away from Cincinnati in a turnover-plagued game. It was a big AFC win for the Oilers.
The Michigan State Fighting Chippewas strolled into South Bend and upset Notre Dame, 36-28. I'm sure numerous Irish fans were ready to pay back wrapper B Kelly for peeing all over their season. Veteran MSU signal-caller O'Connor Cook sparked a good offensive effort, throwing the ball even farther than the Irish DC Uncle Rico.
Meanwhile, the Notre Dame JV team, ND State, went out to Iowa City and pulled off a last second upset of the Huckeyes, 23-21.
The biggest stunner for the Big Ten was Tennessee's win over Ohio. It's been a rough year so far for the Buckeyes. Fortunately I haven't seen Coach Hayes lately, I'm sure a few chairs, a couple TVs, and several toilets are now in pieces in his bunker. Then again, Woody breaks toilets year round. Never seen a guy who can so consistently crack ceramic with one blast.
Western Michigan continued its Big Ten cupcake tour with an easy win over Illinois. Northwestern beat Duke to take possession of the coveted "Plastic Pen Protector" trophy. Penn State upheld league honor by knocking off the yarmulke boys from Temple.
Farther south, Clemson bombed archrival South Carolina, 50-0.
In one of the biggest games of the day, Alabama and Nick Satan came back from a big deficit to upend Latin America's finest team, Ole Miss, 50-43.
Other foreign teams had mixed results. Texas Tech outscored the Fighting Frenchmen of La Tech, 59-45. The Yukon Huskies flew across the continent and won in Charlotte, beating the UVA Hokies 13-10. Meanwhile, cross-state rival Virginia Tech annihilated the BC Frodos 49-0. I'm wondering if BC will again consider dropping football.
I'd like to congratulate Oklahoma State for bouncing back from their devastating loss to the Midshipmen of Seaman U, as OSU won the Bedlam game over their archrivals in Norman, 45-24.
Pac-8 teams had mixed results in their big intersectional games. Cal went up and down the field in defeating Texas 50-43. I haven't seen an Aggie get pounded like that since Lyle Lovett forgot the safe word he'd given Julie Roberts.
Meanwhile Oregon repeatedly went for two points against Nebraska and kept on failing, coming up 3 points short. I'm sure Cornholio was happy to finally get to score with some Beaver.
This Saturday we start to get into some conference action, with Penn State at Michigan, Florida at Tennessee, and the SWC showdown between R Kansas and Texas A&M. See you next week.
