2017 Week 14
December 6, 2017
Whoo boy, that was a fine weekend of conference championship football!
Now in the old days you didn't have these conference title games so the regular season would just end with rivalry week, with games like the Cheerleader Bowel between USC and UCLA and the Oklahoma/Nebraska tilt drawing all the attention.
Now we have these conference championship games played in NFL stadiums between two teams that often have already met, just so the BS system can get even more screwed up than before.
The fun started on Friday when Southern Cal held off Stanford 31-28 to win the Pac-8 championship. I'm sure the Trojans are excited about playing Ohio State in the relocated Rose Bowl in Arlington Texas.
Speaking of the Buckeyes, they also held off a determined foe, ending Wisconsin's undefeated season with a 27-21 win in the Big Ten championship game.
But it wasn't just the big conferences that had championship games. The Toledo Mud Rockets had an easy win over Akorn in the MAC title game held in downtown Detroit. Boys' State got to host their championship game on the blue turf, scoring a late TD to defeat Fresno State in the WAC title game.
Florida Atlantic had an easy win over expansion state North Texas to win the Conference UFO title game.
In one of the most exciting games of the day, Central Florida had yet another high scoring overtime thriller as they beat Memphis in double overtime, 62-55, to win the American Football Conference. I guess the Patriots must be ineligible this year for the AFC title.
It wasn't all traditional conference title games. Oklahoma had little trouble with the TCU Horny Toads, winning 41-17 in the crossover game between the Big 8 and SWC champions.
Florida State, after struggling this year, apparently was relegated to the Sun Belt league, where they won the championship with a 42-10 win over Louisiana Monroe.
Of course there was a lot of excitement in the SEC. The Georgia Bulldogs spotted Auburn an early lead then steamrolled them 28-7 to win the SEC Central title. Meanwhile Clemson had little trouble with Miami and took the SEC East title.
After all that excitement we now have our four team BS playoff field, with Oklahoma playing SEC Central champion Georgia and SEC West champ Alabama playing SEC East champion Clemson. Next year I'm guessing the Sooners will be placed in the SEC North to balance things out.
But the BS system isn't the only college football left. Yes, we're just a few days away from the start of my favorite time of the year, bowel season. Be sure to stay tuned for Beeno's Bowel Preview, as I'll be examining all the bowels to see what I can find. Talk to you soon!
