2018 Week 5

October 2, 2018

Now this last weekend was a truly fine time for college football. High scoring games and exciting finishes, this is why we all love this game so much. Well, that and the Song Girls.

The day started with an exciting battle in Lubbock, with the Mountain Men of Western Virginia taking it to Texas Tech, 42-34. Now one of the key things about football is psychology and not firing up the foe. So it probably wasn't a good idea, when playing WVU, for the Techsters to put a guy named "HATFIELD" out there. I'm surprised the Mountain Man mascot didn't do a bayonet charge into the Texas Tech huddle on that one.

Top ranked Alabama pounded Louisiana, 56-14. That's a tough loss for Coach Ogre and the Bayou Bungholes. Elsewhere in the SEC the surprising Kentucky Wildcats beat South Carolina 24-10. And Florida beat the Fighting Cowbells of Ole Southern Miss State 13-6 in the return to Starkville of Dan Mullet.

Notre Dame continued its unbeaten campaign with an impressive 38-17 win over Stanford in the annual "Battle for the #2 Pencil". My daughter Beth Cook outscored Savannah 35-20, leaving a lot of men happy in the "Battle for the Vaseline-soaked Thong".

In one of the wildest finishes, Hawaii beat Stan Jose State 44-41 in five overtimes. Hawaii put up only 13 points in the 5 overtimes and Stan Jose only had 10, so I'm guessing Stan Jose had five safeties for 10 points and Hawaii got 13 by kicking four field goals and an extra point.

Texas A&M held off a rally by R Kansas, winning 24-17 to take a strong step forward in the Southwest Conference race.

Western Michigan pulled off a nice road win, beating MAC foe Miami 40-39. In spite of their win in Toledo the Canes are finding the Mid-American conference pretty tough and that upcoming trip from Florida to DeKalb could lead to them getting lost in a corn maze.

There was an interesting matchup of ranked teams in Seattle. One team was composed of cultists who follow a funny book, have weird clothing habits, and partake in odd rituals - and that Washington Thetan team beat Bring 'Em Young 35-7.

Clemson had a huge scare against the Syracuse Orange Testicle, falling behind by two scores and losing their starting quarterback days after their backup quarterback Kelly Bryant quit the team. Unfortunately, Kelly wasn't available to come back and save the day as he fell asleep while studying all day in the Clemson library.

In the most anticipated matchup, R Ban Meyer's Ohio State Buckeyes staged a great rally, scoring 13 points in the final minutes to upend host Penn State, 27-26. Folks were a bit confused at the end. The Nittany Lions were trailing by 1 point and facing a 4th and 5. But for some reason Coach Frank took a knee. I haven't seen a Penn State coach take a knee in front of a bunch of burly football players since Coach Sandusky.

I would have asked JoePa what he thought of that play, but I haven't seen JoePa anywhere around here. I know that it's a pretty sore topic with the folks in charge so I haven't asked about his whereabouts in a while.

Next week we dig even deeper into the meat of the schedule, with great matchups like the Red River Shootout at the Texas State Fair, a football game near the Fair between Texas and Oklahoma, Notre Dame's visit to Virginia Tech, LSU vs. Florida, and Illinois at Rutgers. Talk to you soon!
