2020 Week 7

November 10, 2020

Whoa, we had some great thrills in college football this weekend. The highlight had to be Notre Dame's exciting win over the Clemson Tigers, 47-40 in double overtime. Now often I'm a bit confused by the overtime rules but this time it made sense, Clemson got to go first, then Notre Dame went twice, then Clemson went again, so it was kind of like a tie-breaker in tennis except with sudden death rules. And, unlike tennis, no instant replay showing a white line with the sudden appearance of a round white splotch. Usually the only time you see a white line with the sudden appearance of a round white splotch in football is when Coach Fridge trips in the end zone.

When Clemson tried to tie the score during the second overtime their quarterback, DJ Uiagaleieieiei, was hit for a loss on two straight very critical blitzes. I haven't seen two bigger sacks since the 1978 Rod Jeremy/Johnny Wadd film festival.

The Irish now move up to #2 in the BS rankings, while Alabama takes over #1. Alabama didn't play last week yet moved to the top spot, which only goes to prove that old saying about idle hands and Nick Satan.

The week began with the return of MACtion, with six MAC games played on Wednesday night. The closest game was Seaman U's win over Ohio. The most traditional MAC matchup was Toledo's easy 38-3 win over nearby rival Boweling Green. Thanks to that win, Toledo now takes possession of the most coveted football trophy in northwest Ohio, the Perrysburg Meth Lab.

The Pac-8 also returned with both conference and non-conference games. Oregon had an easy win over Stanford and the Washington State Ex-Pirates beat the Oregon State Ducks. In non-conference west coast action, UCLA fell way behind Colorado but came back to make a game of it and cover the over against the Golden Buffaloes, losing 42-48. Southern Cal had a shocking win over Arizona State as the Trojans trailed at the end of regulation but scored two straight times in overtime and held off ASU for the 28-27 win.

Out east North Carolina worked the Four Corners to perfection, running the clock and holding Duke to 24 points in a big ACC win. My Pitt Panthers had a fine outing, blasting the remnants of Florida State's program, 41-17. Similarly Indiana had an easy win over Michigan, 38-21, as Hoosier QB Michael Penix sprayed balls all over the field.

Maryland had a very impressive win in Happy Valley, taking out Penn State 35-19. Bama legend Tuba Tuiasosopo's brother is starting to look pretty impressive for the Twerps. So I'd like to offer a hearty welcome to the bigtime to Tuba's brother, "French Tickler Tuiasosopo".

In intersectional non-conference play, Texas is back (at least for a week) after beating Western Virginia 17-13. The Mountain Men of the Thomas Jefferson State have hit another rough patch against the Loan Star State and I'm not sure whether Western Virginia U will schedule another team from Texas in the near future.

We had some other exciting games that got overshadowed by the Clemson/ND tilt - Miami scored late to beat North Carolina State, Bring 'Em Young pounded Boys' State on the blue turf in Boise, and Florida pulled away from Georgia to win the World's Second Largest Cocktail Party, 44-28 (the world's largest cocktail party was any time Johnny Majors and I opened up the stash in Johnny's office - may not have had 80,000 people but we made up for it with volume).

Next week we'll get ready for top 25 teams in action like SMU vs Tulsa, Alabama vs LSU, oops, never mind, Cincinnati vs East Carolina, Liberty vs Western Carolina, and Troy vs Coastal Carolina. Talk to you soon!
