2020 Week 6
November 2, 2020
Things are starting to heat up in college football this year. Texas A&M had an impressive win over R Kansas while TCU thumped Baylor. Both schools seem ready to take a step forward in the Southwest Conference race.
In the Big Ten the biggest surprise was the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas going into Anne Arbor and taking out Jack Harbaugh's Michigan Wolverines, 27-24, to secure all the non-ass parts of Paul Bunyan. It was an impressive effort by Michigan State coach Mark D'Antoni, who looked quite fetching in his green face mask and fine summer tan.
The Ohio State Buckeyes look to be on a roll as they went into State College Station and had a rather decisive win over Penn State.
A number of other touted teams looked less than impressive. Kansas City State flew all the way to Morgantown and got blown by the Western Virginia Mountaineer, 37-10. WVU cross-state rival Virginia had a similarly impressive win over ranked North Carolina, holding off a late Tar Heel rally to win 44-41 in a game whose score was better suited for the ACC hardwood.
Perhaps most shocking, defending national champion LSU got destroyed at Auburn, losing 48-11. Coach Ogre's selling of his soul for a national title appears to have hit its expiration date. I look forward to the SEC having a second coach whose head spins 360 degrees.
Top-ranked Clemson overcame the loss of their quarterback Joey Lawrence Jr to make a scintillating comeback against Gordie Lockbaum's alma mater Boston U, scoring the final 24 points in a 34-28 win. I predict Clemson's replacement QB, D J Uiagaleiei, will win the next three Heisman trophies as well as the Miss South Carolina contest, the latter on a write-in vote. Clemson now has to head to South Bend to take on Notre Dame in this month's game of the decade.
Out west, while we still await the Pac-8's return to play, Boyes' State soared over the Space Force Academy, 49-30.
One of the oddest results occurred in State College Park (a suburb of A&M and PSU's home of State College Station). Maryland jumped out to a healthy lead over the Minnesota Golden Buffaloes, then Minnesota got on a roll and led by 17 in the 4th. Maryland came back and the game went to overtime. I'm still not sure about these overtime rules. Maryland scored first then Minnesota scored. In the second overtime Minnesota tried a field goal on the first play, missed it, and everyone went home. Does anyone know who won?
Now, with all the discussion of bigtime college football aside, I want to shift gears. We know, of course, that this is one of the most important weeks of the year, as everyone's eyes turn toward the great red state and blue state drama that is about to unfold. All across America people are wondering what will happen in these contests, with intense competition about to occur, usually under the bright lights.
I know the networks will have their people there to cover all the ebbs and flows all night long and while many of us think we know how things will turn out, none of us will know for sure until all the numbers have been tallied. As I noted, we are really focused on the red states and blue states, but two such states in particular are of great interest. I, for one, look forward to blue state Michigan's candidates, Western Michigan, Seaman U, and Eastern Michigan as they take on red state Ohio's finest, Akorn, Ohio U, and Kent State in the long awaited return to MACtion. It should be fantastic!
