2020 Week 5
October 28, 2020
Well the season is finally rounding into shape, with the Big Ten finally joining the dance along with the WAC and the Pac-8 and MAC soon to follow. That's the second best thing about the blessed end of the baseball season, ESPN stops pussyfooting around and starts showing mid-week MAC Attack games. The BEST thing about the end of the baseball season is the end of the baseball season.
At present the only early week football is NFL football. I did tune that in Monday night, long enough to hear my good friend Mike Tirico say "Khalil Mack will make a pile right here". I would suggest some Immodium.
The virus is still causing cancellations, etc. Wisconsin looks to have lost 2-3 quarterbacks and I'm guessing their emergency replacement for QB is the same as for coach and we'll soon be seeing the return of Barry Alvarez. If they can find a uniform that fits him.
I also heard that Beth Cook cancelled all athletics this year. That's good, I got tired of seeing my daughter doing videos for various water sports.
Now I've mentioned that people ask me about JoePa and I said I have not seen him and that people around here don't want to talk about it. Well, the other day I saw Coach Paterno walking around in his black shoes, flood pants, and white socks - and he had a stench of Brylcream. So I went up to him and said "Coach, welcome to college football heaven" and he started mumbling a bit, then started laughing.
Turned out it was our most wily of newcomers Hayden Fry playing a prank on me by dressing up as Coach Paterno. He sure has quite the sense of humor. He also broke into Coach Bo's apartment and painted the toilet pink and I thought ole Bo was going to tear his place to shreds.
Coach Fry did kind of get his comeuppance, indirectly, as Purdue upset his Huckeyes 24-20 in the opener. Bo and his best buddy Woody were still giggling about that the next day.
Notre Dame clobbered my Panthers 45-3. Coach Nadd Dogg may not be working out after all and the Irish look ready for their showdown with Clemson.
Miami pulled out a tight 19-14 win over Virginia. Meanwhile, Alabama thumped Tennessee 48-17.
Cross-state rival Auburn had a tight dramatic win over Ole Southern Miss, 35-28 that was keyed by a missed call that took away an Ole Southern Miss touchdown. Coach Layla Kiffin was pretty livid after the game and ended up getting fined by the SEC.
That ending wasn't nearly as controversial as the one in Bloomington Indiana though, as Indiana went for two at the end of overtime and was ruled to have scored to upset Penn State 36-35. The refs said that the goal line was penetrated by Penix, this, after the IU D allowed numerous penetrations by the Nittany Lions.
The key Indiana defensive failure really wasn't a failure as Penn State, up by 1 point late, scored a TD to extend their lead to 8, giving Indiana a chance to get the ball back and tie the game near the end of regulation. I haven't seen such a dumb decision to score since my friend Billy's prom night with "Syphilitic Sally".
I'm curious as to what Coach Paterno thought about the call and the late PSU TD. I'll have to ask Coach Fry if he'll put that costume back on for me so I can ask. I'll let you know what he says. Talk to you soon!
