2022 Week 5

October 5, 2022

We had a lot of entertaining games last weekend.

Unfortunately the trend toward cupcake games even in October is starting to grow. Syracuse clobbered Wagner 59-0, going 18 for 18 from the air as they faced no pass rush. You'd normally think blitzing would come naturally to German kids.

Elsewhere in the Empire State, Buffalo came from behind to beat Miami 24-20. A concussion for Miami quarterback Tuba Tuiasosopo aided the Bills' comeback.

Tuba's brother had another fine performance as Maryland defeated the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas, 27-13. I'm sure their parents, former Washington star Marques Tuiasosopo and former Ohio State quarterback Tommy Tuba, are proud of Tuba and Timpani.

Wrapper B Kelly seems to be turning around LSU, at least from how they did under Coach Ogre the last two seasons, with a fine 21-17 comeback win at Auburn. Coach Kelly does look good in purple polo shirts, it matched his skin color, at least when Auburn took a 17-0 lead.

We are starting to see coaches lose their jobs earlier and earlier. Arizona mauled a surprisingly weak Colorado team, leading to the firing of coach Karl Dorrell. And former Wisconsin coach Butt-head showed up in Madison with the Illini and pounded the hell out of the Badgers, 34-10, leading to a coaching change at Wisconsin. I did learn the hard way that calling someone a "Chryst killer" doesn't go over well in the heavenly realm. They're pretty sensitive about that.

Speaking of recent coaching changes, Georgia Tech seems to have already turned things around as interim coach Brent Key led the Yellow Jackets to victory over my Pitt guys. I'm thinking maybe it's time for Panther coach Nad Dogg to head off to the shelter.

Florida State looked like they might be turning things around, then dropped one to Wake Forest. I could hear Coach Bowden yelling "Dadgummit" from a couple hundred feet away. He doesn't take those sorts of losses to teams like Wake too well, he told me recently "there's several reasons we joined the ACC, they're called Wake Forest, Virginia, Duke, and NC State".

One of the best matchups of the day took place in Oxford Mississippi as Ole Southern Miss held off Kentucky 22-19 thanks to the Wildcats turning the ball over in field goal range 3 times in the final 16 minutes as quarterback Will Beavis sucked. Coach Stoops probably wishes he was back at Oklahoma.

Well, maybe not. The Sooners got blasted by TCU 55-24. I'm not sure what's going on in Norman, but I'm sure glad Barry Switzer isn't up here yet to yell at me about it.

In one of the other top matchups, Clemson pulled away from top 10 rated North Carolina State to win 30-20. The Tigers appear poised to make yet another playoff run. Meanwhile Alabama went to Fayetteville, R Kansas, and toyed with the Razorbacks. Heisman winner Bryce Young did a fine imitation of his father Vince then got hurt, which allowed R Kansas to come back. Then the Tide's backup quarterback Jalen Milroe ran about 80 yards for a touchdown to break the game back open again.

The closest thing to a surprise last weekend occurred in Columbia Missouri, where the #1 Georgia Bulldogs got into a battle with the Missouri Tigers. Georgia kept on fumbling while Missouri kept on settling for field goals and the Bulldogs finally came out on top 26-22. I told my good friend Dave Diles that this sort of effort may make Missouri a true member of the SEC. Dave said "Missouri qualified for SEC membership due to their efforts during the Civil War, just ask anyone from Kansas".

Next week is going to be a fun time, with Tennessee at LSU, Notre Dame playing BYU in Vegas, the Aggies coming to Tuscaloosa, and Nebraska at Rutgers. Talk to you soon!
