2025 Week 10
November 3, 2025
This weekend had a lot of great action and also featured one of the high points of the fall: the baseball season is finally over so we are home free until the end of the college football season. Of course they had to stretch things out so their season didn't end until early Sunday morning, well after just about every college football game concluded.
At least we got to watch the latter half of that critical Stan Jose State win over Hawaii without any college football announcers updating us on baseball scores. Look, guys (and gals), when you tell us that you've got a crucial update, I'm expecting to hear about Montana scoring another TD at Weber State, not about another overpaid player striking out in some never ending baseball game being played in Toronto.
There were a lot of top matchups. One of the best was played in Austin, as Texas built a huge 34-10 lead on Vanderbilt then held on for dear life at the end as Vandy pulled to within 3 and nearly recovered an onside kick. I give a lot of credit to Longhorn QB Peyton Manning III as he played much better one week after taking a blow to the head. He may be just like one of those old style tube TV sets where you had to pound your fist on it a couple times to get the picture to come through again. If he starts playing badly again Coach Sark may want to keep handy one of his empty whiskey bottles.
Farther north in Texas, Southern Methodist pulled off a stunning upset over the Miami Hurricanes, 26-20. The Mustangs tied the game late on a FG drive that was kept alive by a fourth down cheap shot penalty on Miami, which means the Hurricanes have gone back to their 1980's style except with less winning. SMU also went back to their 80's style - I heard that the Pony made an appearance at the game and that he and Eric Dickerson were honored with a mural made of $100 bills.
Farther south in Texas, Western Virginia came to town and upset Houston, 45-35, a big win for Coach Dickrod. I had kind of ignored that game, figuring it would be an easy win for the Oilers.
In a matchup of former bluebloods, Southern Cal scored late to win in Lincoln, 21-17. It's great to see a true intersectional non-conference game the day after Halloween.
Clemson and Penn State are in a tight battle for biggest disappointment as Penn State got dominated at the Horseshoe, losing to Ohio State 38-14, while Clemson gave up a last minute TD and 2-pointer to lose to Duke 46-45. I was impressed at all the points in that game, usually ACC football is like ACC basketball with scores in the 25-35 point range.
Georgia came from behind to win on the road at the FU Gator's Bowels stadium in Jacksonville, 24-20. They call it the world's largest cocktail party but they've never been to one of my good friend Pat Summerall's birthday bashes.
The SEC featured a dramatic coach-off, with Kentucky beating Auburn 10-3. The two teams combined for 480 yards, about as many yards as Indiana puts up in many first halves. As a result Coach Mark Stoops lives to coach another day while Coach Hugh Freeze got fired. Coach Stoops advances to next week's coach-off vs. Florida's interim.
Oklahoma went up to Rocky Top and knocked off the Vols 33-27, but the real story was the Oklahoma kicker's short shorts attire. Well, actually the real story was my good friend Herb Street blowing a gasket over a kicker showing off his gams.
It's been a long standing issue with Herb because I remember being on set 20 years ago when Stacey Dales showed up in a mini-skirt. Herb starting muttering about how he wasn't allowed to wear something that short and he always shaved his legs just in case. Then Coach Corso gave Herb some of his "Coach Lee's Collection" of frilly underwear and Herb settled down after that. I don't understand Herb at times.
It's November, which means we're getting closer and closer to one of the great weeks of the college football season, SEC Cupcake week. But before then we'll have to settle for top matchups like Navy at Notre Dame, LSU at Alabama, and the Citadel at Ole Southern Piss. Hmm, maybe Cupcake week is closer than I thought.
