2026 Week 5
October 7, 2026
It was a pretty exciting weekend of college football and there's even better news. No, not the fact that baseball will be done sometime in the next month, though that's great news too. We've started on Conference UFO October, which means we've got games Tuesday through Saturday.
Sadly, though, unlike November MACtion, there won't be any snowstorms in these southern venues. Unless Jimmy Johnson comes out of retirement to cover some games and scratches his head, that might cause both hairspray damage to the ozone layer and a blizzard of dandruff.
Speaking of former coaches, Coach Bo is still in time out from his reaction to Michigan's loss to Iowa, which is just as well as some of the guys came in to razz him after the Wolverines lost again. Big Ten legend Bubba Smith, who hasn't missed a meal of late, stopped by and said he couldn't believe Michigan had lost to Minnesota, I said it was a quite important rivalry game back in the day, how they played for a little brown jug. Bubba then took off his shirt and said "let me show you some big brown jugs".
I told Bubba that joke was much funnier and pleasant when Joan Crawford said she'd show some golden globes. Next thing I knew my hair was wet due to getting a swirly. I have to remember not to joke with these guys too much.
Southern Cal won a blunder bowel over Washington, 25-21, to take command of the Pac-8 race.
My Pitt Panthers won a thriller down in Blacksburg as they held off Virginia Tech 35-33. VPI actually lined up for a game-winning field goal at the end and the kick looked awfully good but the refs thought otherwise. Coach should know that once you leave Penn State you don't get the calls anymore.
Speaking of the Nittany Lions, they helped dedicate Northwestern's new stadium by rolling over and playing dead as the Wildcats ran for over 400 yards in a 34-13 victory. Northwestern brought in former Notre Dame and LSU coach and wrapper B Kelly's brother, C Kelly. C Kelly installed an old school high school offense complete with buck laterals, double wing pitchouts, and fullbacks rumbling through the Penn State secondary like 1983 Cornhuskers. I bet that would cause JoePa some nightmares, except I don't know where JoePa is these days, haven't seen him around.
Elsewhere in the Big Ten, there's been more expansion. Ohio State went on the road and had a relatively easy 31-14 win over the Atlanta Hawks. I'm not sure why Congress had some big committee meeting and forced the Big Ten added an NBA team and made them play football, but I guess that's what happens when you get government involvement. Next thing you know Congress will ban the SEC from paying players under the table. Ha ha, I kid.
Florida looked to be off to a great start, but got walloped by, let me check, Missouri? Wow, times have changed in the SEC. The Gators should bring back Coach Superior, he can't be much older than Jordon's boyfriend.
One of the most exciting games in the SEC took place in Columbia, as Kentucky pulled out a seesaw affair over South Carolina in overtime, winning 35-34.
Now I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules and how coaches react to them. My understanding is that each team gets a chance and if the score isn't tied after that, the game ends and the team with more points wins. The game was tied at 27 entering overtime. Kentucky scored and went for two points to lead 35-27. Then it was the Gamecocks' turn, they scored to make it 35-33 and then the South Carolina coach opted to kick the extra point instead of going for 2, which meant Kentucky was still ahead 35-34 after the first overtime so the Wildcats won the game.
I haven't seen a Cock make such a dumb decision since Michigan's previous coach.
Well, this is a big week coming up, we've got Georgia vs. Bama, the Red River Shootout at the Cotton Bowel, and the battle for the #2 pencil as Notre Dame hosts Stanford. Talk to you soon!
