2026 Week 6
October 13, 2026
Wow, was that a great weekend of college football or what? One close finish after another, upsets, crazy officiating, and the goofy exchange students at Florida International dyeing the uniforms and end zones pink and teal. I couldn't quite make out the lettering at FIU's stadium, at first I thought it read "VICEU" but then I remembered that these guys aren't native English speakers and I realized it was a Romanian word, "VECEU", which stands for water closets. Never understood those fancy Euro bidets, it's my belief that you spray out not in.
Speaking of bathrooms, the University of Nebraska is selling used urinal troughs for $3,000 apiece. They weigh 300 pounds - roughly 400 pounds if you count the caked on layers of decades-old corn farmer urine. I don't even want to know what my good friend Lee Corso would do with one of those.
One of the most dramatic games of the weekend was the Red River Shootout between Oklahoma and Texas. Texas looked to be in control then Peyton Manning III started throwing the ball to the Sooners, just like his grandpa so often did during AFC championship games. Oklahoma kicked a late field goal for a 27-24 win and there's no question that Texas is back. Back to where they were in 2025, 2024, 2023, etc.
The Oregon Ducks are having an unusually difficult year. They were upset by a surprisingly undefeated UCLA team, 17-15.
For some strange reason Oregon decided to come onto the field inside a wooden Trojan horse even though the USC Trojans were the opponent last week. The gambit failed miserably. Then my good friend Dave Diles, oddly adopting a British accent, said "perhaps if they built a large wooden Badger". I said "Dave, come on, Oregon isn't even playing Wisconsin this year".
Dave then said it was a reference to some British movie. I said "Dave, the only movie I watch anymore is 'Casablanca'. Well, that and all 17 chapters of the Emanuelle series".
He seemed confused by that, which is fine, as I don't understand Dave at times either.
Coach Palpatine had a great come from behind victory at Heinz Ward field over my Panthers, 21-17. Meanwhile the Atlanta Huckeyes went out to Seattle and put up 41 points on the Huskies. This is a new and improved offensive product for Coach Ferentz, usually they score about 41 points per month.
There are more and more overseas teams and overseas games. The University of Louisiana flew to Paris to take on La Tech and the Fighting Frenchmen came back with two scores in the final 5 minutes to upend the Ragin' Cajuns, 32-31. Next time Louisiana should skip La Tech and just play a team from their home state.
I was really excited during the fourth quarter of a game down South - App State led Old Dominion 3-2 and ODU was driving. I was hoping for a turnover, then a safety, and a 4-3 victory. But, alas, Old Dominion had to spoil things by scoring a TD and a 2 pointer to win 10-3. Someday we'll have another 4-3 or 6-4 game. And hopefully next time it won't involve Penn State.
Defending national champion Nebraska lost a tough one to upstart Indiana, 20-17. Wait a second, I mean defending national champion Indiana pulled out a tight one over upstart Nebraska, 20-17. Sorry, sometimes I have 1995 flashbacks. But I have to be careful, because if think back to the '95 Nebraska team and say "there goes Frazier" the next thing I know Howard Cosell will come racing in to say "it's 'DOWN GOES FRAZIER'". And the last thing you want is Howard showing up to talk boxing because that will take up about 3 hours. Or a lot less than 3 hours if I have gas.
The biggest game of the day was in Tuscaloosa, where two SEC titans met up in a great battle. When it ended, Georgia had held off Alabama 20-17, thanks in part to a missed pass interference call that could have given the Tide the lead.
Usually Bear is one of the calmest people up here but he was swearing up a storm after that. And once the game ended there was a neat role reversal, usually Bear is the one giving Coach Woody the needle, but this time Woody kept on needling Bear by asking if Coach DeBore had forgotten to pay off the refs this time. Finally Woody stopped talking, which surprised me, then I noticed he had a houndstooth hat jammed in his mouth. Don't poke the Bear.
The wildest finish was in Lexington, as Coach Monty Kiffin's defensive prowess came into question. During overtime Kentucky went for 2 points and the win and scored the winning points on a quarterback draw where there were no back 7 defenders within 10 yards of the quarterback. The center of the field was so wide open he could have walked in. Those defenders left a monstrous gap - I haven't seen anything spread so wide since my daughter Beth Cook's prom night.
The best news coming out of this weekend is that we are just days away from the Third Saturday in October, which features that traditional southern matchup that we all anticipate. So let's all get fired up to watch the funky cadet showdown, The Citadel at Texas A&M.
