1997 Week 1
September 4, 1997
Well, the football season got off to a slow start last week. The games really weren't worth watching unless you were from West Virginia. In that little state, they played the game of the century. Previous Div. I-AA champ Marshall went up against West Virginia, in what many people thought was going to be a blow out. but Marshall hung tough, in part due to the play of Randy Moss. Now, this kid can play some ball. Jumps, catches, and outruns everyone - but not the cops!!! I was thinking of what FSU or ND could have done with someone like him.
Speaking of ND, they kick off the new kinder, gentler era of football in South Bend this weekend. They are also rededicating the stadium but no one knows for sure if the Pope is attending. I guess they will try anything to fill that place up.
I hope for Bob Davie's sake that they can place some people in that stadium. Seeing it so empty last year was a little unsettling. I even read recently where they had to turn away people and money for tickets to home games last year. It's too bad that those who got the tickets decided not to show up. I bet if they gave their seats to some of those who lost in that lottery, they may have filled up the place.
So here's to the Fighting Irish - may every seat be filled. And may Princess Di's funeral be over in time for the game. Who would have thunk that they would schedule a funeral for 2 hours before kick-off? That is ludricous. I can believe that NBC wasn't able to better schedule this weekend's TV programs.
Now, in my neck of the woods, Pittsburgh gets to do battle with Penn State. The Panthers haven't had to play PSU for years and I think they are getting real anxious to renew this series. I remember years ago watching the two teams play on Thanksgiving day. Mom and I would sit down with our turkeys, pumpkin pie and a 6 pack of Rolling Rock and root on the Panthers. So, in honor of you, Mom is going to cook 2 20 lb. turkeys this weekend.
Hey Mom, save me a cold one.
