2010 Week 14

December 8, 2010

It seems like just three months ago we were kicking off the regular season of college football and now, sad to say, it's finally over.

I spent all day Saturday perched in front of my television, giving my remote a good workout as I juggled several football games and AMC's "Smokey and the Bandit" marathon.

My good friend Lee Corso told me that his former FSU teammate Bert Reynolds had a fine old time working on that movie. "Beeno, Bert said that Sally Field had the perfect onion". I said I was allergic to onions. Lee said "that's too bad Beeno, it's a fun change of pace, me and Shawn McDonald like to take turns with each other's onion".

I don't understand Lee at times.

The games actually started on Thursday night, when Arizona squared off with fellow WAC power Arizona State. Once again the game went to overtime and, once again, I'm a bit confused about the overtime rules. Arizona scored, then missed the extra point. Then in the next overtime they scored and missed the extra point again and this time, mysteriously, the game was over.

On Friday there was an exciting finish in the MAC championship game. Northern Illinois had a late lead but a tipped pass gave the win to Miami. Congratulations Coach Shannon!!!

My Pitt Panthers knocked off Cincinnati in the season finale. Yukon defeated South Florida to win the Big East. I'm getting a bit tired of a Canadian school traveling to Havana to win an American championship. Southern Cal won a late-night snooze-fest over UCLA and claimed the Cheerleader Bowel.

One of the other great traditional games this weekend featured the Oklahoma Sooners winning a tight championship game over archrival Nebraska. Congratulations to Coach Switzer on yet another Big Eight title.

Of course most eyes were on the two key battles affecting the BS title. Auburn beat South Carolina while Oregon stomped Oregon State, so the BS title game will feature a great Tiger trying to pound Beavers. Sounds like the PGA tour to me.

There was one thing last weekend that disturbed me and I felt obliged to mention it: Illinois traveled to play FSU and FSU had a big green "V" on the back of their helmets. This is a disturbing trend, having sponsors like Valvoline on football helmets like they were some race car driver.

I can only imagine what will happen if NASACAR gets its hands on the ACC and those powder blue North Carolina uniforms are covered with STP decals.

Of course that would still look better than Oregon's uniforms.

Now that the matchups are set I'll be finishing up my bowel preview over the next week. See you soon.
