2010 Week 3
September 23, 2010
September is my least favorite month of college football. You get some lousy matchups, it's still hot and humid outside, and the sportscasts are full of baseball highlights.
One of the few interesting college football events on the September schedule is the Big Ten/MAC Challenge. The Big Ten got the best of the matchups this year, as Purdue beat Bald State and Penn State did a state trooper job on Kent State. Ohio State blew out the Ohio University, but that game was overshadowed by the battle of the mascots, as Ohio's mascot manhandled Beavis Buckeye.
Perhaps the most exciting Big Ten vs MAC game was the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas' overtime win over Notre Dame, so at least one MAC team triumphed. I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules. Notre Dame went first and opted to kick a field goal. Michigan State had to score, but had a fourth down and put their punter out on the field, which seemed kind of foolish. Then they let the punter throw a pass and it went all the way for a game-winning TD.
After the post-game press conference Chippewa coach and former actor/MSU football star Dan Tanna had to go to the hospital with some heart troubles. It had to be shocking for Coach Tanna to walk in on Irish coach/wrapper B Kelly treating a local TV reportress to a golden shower.
Speaking of Coach Kelly, I'd like to apologize for noting a couple weeks ago that ND coach Charles White looked good after having lost weight. I did flip over a few times during that game to watch Texas play at Texas Tech and was happy to see how much better Coach Rick Leach looks with that touch of gray in his hair.
In other Big Ten vs MAC action, Wisconsin beat Appalachian State and Northwestern bombed Rice. Michigan had a tough game against U-Mass but pulled out the win.
I would like to apologize for my comment last week about Michigan's "special" player, as I referred to him as "Dotard Robinson". Apparently that is not his actual name. I apologize to Mr. Roberson. Sorry, Dotard.
I railed against USC for playing a split squad game, so this week they one-upped me went out and played three games -- they beat Minnesota and Furman, but the men of Troy lost a tight one to Alabama.
The biggest game of the week likely was the Florida vs Tennessee showdown. As usual, the SEC South showed its dominance over the north, as the Gators rolled to victory. Samford blew out Wake Forest and Coach Jack Harbaugh seems to be doing a great job with the Fighting Trees. Navy pounded the Parisian boys from La Tech. Not since the heyday of Dom DeLuise have I seen a Frenchman going down with Seamen like that.
Last time around I discussed the whole conference realignment, how we were seeing teams from Canada like Yukon joining American conferences. Then this week I read about a South Atlantic League football game where Charleston Southern lost to Mars Hill. When in the dickens did the NCAA start letting space freaks from other planets play football? This has gone too far.
