2010 Week 4
September 28, 2010
Now weekends like last weekend are why I truly enjoy college football. A slow September built up to a scintillating finish, with big games and upsets galore.
The folks in Knoxville had to be really upset when Coach Kiffen took off to replace Pete Carroll at USC. But I never thought an NFL assistant like Monty Kiffen was suited for the SEC. He belongs with the pros and that's what he has in Inglewood.
Besides, if you're going to get an experienced coach, get one that knows the SEC. So it was exciting when the Vols lured Vince Dooley out of retirement. And, whoa nellie, they had a slambanger last Saturday in Knoxville. The Third Saturday in October came early this year, but Tennessee won a scintillating double overtime game against #1 rated Alabama. After the defeat I heard that Coach Nick Satan was so angry that his head spun around a couple times.
The SEC was not the only conference to see a shocking result. Top Ten rated Southwest Conference powerhouse R Kansas was stunned in a close game by Alabama-Birmingham.
It was a good day for the satellite campus schools that only recently established programs. Texas got pounded by another satellite school, Cal-Los Angeles.
In other action, Coach B Kelly's Fighting Irish lost the battle for the #2 catheter to Stanford. I wish to apologize to those who complained that I got Coach Harbaugh's name wrong last week. Actually it's not former Coach Jack Harbaugh who is in charge of the Indians, it's his son. What a fine job by John Harbaugh.
There were a number of other rivalry games played. TCU beat SMU in the battle for fans' eternal souls. The two top Canadian teams had their grudge match, as Yukon knocked off Buffalo
The Big Ten/MAC challenge continues. The Toledo Mud Rockets turned the tables and stuck one up Frank Perdue's wazoo. Miami of Ohio got bombed by new Big Ten member Missouri.
The Big Ten is splitting into two divisions next year, but they haven't named the divisions. There has been some talk that the league will name its new divisions after the icons of the two most prominent programs, Michigan and Ohio State. I look forward to seeing the various teams compete in the the Unabomber and the Clarett Divisions.
Syracuse knocked off Colgate. Schools with sponsors have struggled some this year. Colgate isn't very good. That finishing school in Utah, Bring 'Em Young, has also been an underachiever. Daisy Duke is one of the worst schools in the ACC (though you gotta love the cheerleaders' outfits). And it's been a bad few years for Army University.
Finally, I'd like to wish former Notre Dame coach Charles White well. I heard on the news that he had his Ball Gladder surgery. I'm not quite sure how that ball fixin' surgery works. Last time I had any surgery down there it was a tuck because I was worried that in a few more years I'd be dragging something on the floor. I had a beagle who was even worse off than me.
Great dog, but watching that thing nearly touching the floor, swaying back and forth, was really hypnotic. I'd look at him standing there, seeing it rock back and forth like a pendulum, and go into a daze. Next thing I knew it would be two days later. I told my good friend Chris Berman about the dog and how parts of him swang. I then noted that I wished I could do that. Chris said "you better kiss him first". Sometimes I don't understand Boomer.
