2010 Week 5

October 6, 2010

We're finally into the month of October, where we start seeing the contenders separate themselves from the pack.

Of course some teams are still a work in progress. Last Thursday I enjoyed that non-conference A&M tussle between the Ag schools in Oklahoma and Texas. After some sloppy play in the closing minutes the Cowboys pulled out the win following a bad pass by the quarterback for the Longhorns.

Meanwhile the regular schools in those states met in Red River Shootout at the Dallas School Book Suppository. I asked my good friend Mike Tirico about the Dallas School Book Suppository. He said he preferred Coke bottles. I don't understand Mike at times.

LSU beat Tennessee after Vince Dooley's team couldn't stop the Bayou Bengals even after employing their trademark Vol 5-3-5 defense.

Out West the Pac-8 race is heating up. Oregon came from behind to knock off Stanford 52-31 after the Stanford players spent the first 30 minutes pounding the Beavers.

I would like to apologize for stating that Jack Harbaugh's son John Harbaugh is the Stanford coach. With all the great coaching talent in the family, it's easy to get them all mixed up. I knew it was someone in the Harbaugh family. Stanford's head coach is actually the newest "son" of Jack's, former basketball coach Tom Cream.

In the biggest game of the weekend, Alabama, behind coach Nick Satan, really stuck it to highly rated Florida, 31-6. It was another great game for the comeback story of the millenium, legendary NFL wideout Mark Ingram.

Notre Dame got back on the right track under new coach B Kelly, blasting Boston University in Baked Bean town. I was intrigued by the story about the BU player who had Ewing's Sacroma. I mentioned that to my good friend Lee Corso.

Lee told me that experiencing Ewing's Sacroma was unfortunate but wasn't too uncommon. He said "I went to Italy for the World Basketball championships years ago and got Ewing's Sacroma, Jordan's Rumpnapoli, and Laettner's Genoatalia" then started talking about bags of tea. Lee confuses me sometimes.

Bring 'Em Young, which is about to go independent, started on its barnstorming tour. The Cougars were knocked off by the University of Texas at Houston State. U.T.A.H. State is another up and coming program in the Loan Star State.

I was a bit disappointed when I switched over to ABC's Big Ten game on Saturday night. Penn State was getting dominated by Iowa. I'm getting worried that the game is passing JoePa by. But I wouldn't just make judgements based on age, otherwise I'd have to look across the field at Kinnick Stadium and express similar concern about Coach Fry.

I was watching the ESPN crawl for other scores on Saturday night and I saw "BETH COOK 69, MORGANNA ST 32". First off, Morganna's definitely at least a 34 or 36. As for the 69, I'm really getting tired of reading on the TV screen about the personal exploits of my daughter Beth.

Another interesting Big Ten game was played in Champagne and Ohio State pulled out a tight victory over the Illini. After the game they awarded a very strange trophy called the "IlliBuck". It's some strange looking tortoise. Apparently at the start of the rivalry they actually exchanged a live turtle for a couple years. Then some OSU metallurgical student had it bronzed and the poor thing died.

Exchanging unusual trophies has a long history in college football. I can remember back in my fraternity days at Pitt. We had a heated rivalry with Western Virginia and they played us up in Pittsburgh one year. After the Panthers pulled off a great upset, the Mountain Men were in a hurry to pile into their Model A's and get back to the Thomas Jefferson State.

WVU left behind one of their most prized possessions and my fraternity brother James brought it back to the frat. We took a lot of pleasure in posing for photos and having fun with the trophy.

Pretty soon our University President heard from his counterpart in Morgantown. He told the WVU President "come back here and beat us if you want to get back your sheep". Two years later the Mountain Men came up, beat Pitt, and back to their campus went our precious, kind-natured sheep friend Elke Sommer.
