2012 Week 4
September 27, 2012
Now that was one exciting long weekend of college football. It was especially exciting on Saturday night, with all these big prime time network games. Kansas State pulled an upset in Norman, in yet another great win for former ASU coach Bruce Snyder. Florida State made a huge comeback and surged past Clemson 49-37, showing the superiority of the SEC South Division vs. the ACC Central.
In a more traditional rivalry between Midwestern power programs, Notre Dame knocked off Michigan 13-6. The Irish seem to have taken a big step forward under head coach B Kelly.
I was a bit confused later on that night after watching video from the William & Mary vs. Delaware game. It was like watching a re-run of the ND/Michigan game. Delaware apparently borrowed Michigan uniforms, and William & Mary had hand-me-down Dan Divine green and gold Notre Dame uniforms, so it looked like a JV game. William & Mary's helmet even had "Tribe" written on it in honor of Jesus' Jewish roots. Though I'm confused about the William & Mary school name, I thought Jesus' stepdad was named Jimmy.
It was an interesting week for other Big Ten teams. Iowa failed to recover an onside kick and lost to the midshipmen of Seamen U. Northwestern moved to 4-0 by knocking off future Big Ten member South Dakota.
There were two huge upsets in the league. The Fighting Illini were humiliated 52-24 by the fighting Frenchmen of La Tech. And the Ohio State Buckeyes pulled off a shocking 29-15 win over Alabama.
The other power in the SEC, the LSU fighting Tigers, fared a bit better, winning a knuckle-biting 12-10 game against Auburn. South Carolina welcomed Missouri to the SEC North with a 31-10 pounding.
One of the ugliest games occurred in the WAC, as Boys' State scored a defensive touchdown to nose out Bring 'Em Young 7-6. Whatever happened to the old pass-happy days at BYU with Giff Nielsen, Steve Young, and Ed McMahon?
Washington State is still struggling under coach Leach. They blew a 34-14 lead and lost to Colorado. Oregon eviscerated Arizona 49-0, while Southern Cal turned things around against regular Cal.
There's been a lot of talk about the NFL and the lockout of the referees and the hiring of replacement referees. The whole issue of strikes has a history in college football as well.
I remember watching a documentary about an old-time college coaches' strike where they had to bring in replacement coaches. Coach Paterno was replaced by a retired pro coach named Tony and the president of the university was played by that Mary girl who got splooged by Ben Stiller. Coach Tony then made a speech about using every inch. Then Tony said "say hello to my little friend", brought out that Tattoo guy, and had his brother Joe Montana shoot him. That fired up the Nittany Lions and they won the six-team competition for the Jack Lambert Trophy.
Later on each of the coaches of the other five teams were gunned down, my good friend Roone Arledge found Sarah Jessica Parker's head in his bed, then Coach had JoePa's brother killed while he was swimming in Lake Tahoe.
These days college football coaches don't have a union, so there are no replacement coaches. Which doesn't prevent my good friend Lee Corso from sending his resume to every college out there, as well as to a few Chip'n'Dale dance troupes. I don't understand Lee at times.
