2012 Week 5
October 4, 2012
I got up bright and early on Saturday morning and did some work in my garden. This new lady who moved in next door introduced herself and said her name was Keri. She noticed my garden and asked if I liked potatoes. I said "I like just about any kind of potato, what do you have?" She said "liquid potatoes" and let me take a swig from her bottle of vodka. I think I'm going to like this new neighbor.
Then I went back inside, leaned back in the recliner, and tuned in some college football. I really enjoy the fall.
For a moment I was tired enough to doze off while watching Stony Brook pounding Army into submission. It's pretty sad when a bunch of nerds at some science school can beat up on our future military officers. Then I switched over to that network that has the show with football legend Al Bundy's wife and woke up immediately. They were showing Western Virginia vs. Baylor. Whoa nellie, there was some action going on there, and I'm not just talking about the Mountain Man, his rifle, and those naive Baptist cheerleaders.
Western Virginia and Baylor went up and down the field like greyhounds chasing a rabbit, with Western Virginia taking a 70-63 win in their Southwest Conference debut. I predict that Geno Smith will win two Heisman trophies and the WNBA most valuable player trophy.
The rest of the Thomas Jefferson State did not do nearly as well as Western Virginia. Virginia Tech was knocked off by Cincinnati, 27-24, which is embarrassing given how bad the Bengals have been of late. And the flagship of the state, the University of Virginia, was humiliated by La Tech, 44-38. France seems to have finally put together a good football team this year.
In other foreigner action, Yukon beat Buffalo to win the Canadian championship.
It was a bad weekend for some in the ACC. Georgia Tech got pounded by Middle Tennessee. Things went better down in Athens, as Georgia held off regular Tennessee 51-44.
There was a controversy following Ohio State's win over the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas. Apparently the game film sent by OSU before the contest was edited and that upset the people at MSU. I still remember back when I was working with Coach Majors at Pitt and Boston College sent us edited game film that showed a guy that looked like Dan Marino with a couple of goats.
Elsewhere in the Big Ten the level of play has been pretty poor. But I was surprised to tune in Saturday night and see a Northwestern intrasquad scrimmage on ABC. The N team came from behind to beat the W's. I did notice that Iowa retained the farming services of Floyd Rosedale.
I must apologize regarding R Kansas. A couple weeks ago after the Hogs got slaughtered by Alabama, I mentioned that Coach Petrino had changed his name to "John Smith" to avoid embarrassment. It turns out that Coach Petrino got fired last spring. Apparently R Kansas hired a street person named John Smith who likes to talk about warm urine and probably has a few screws loose.
I was disappointed to see that the Jawhawks were off this week. I was looking forward to watching former USC star and ND coach Charles White in Lawrence, especially because the Jayhawks now have Christ at quarterback.
It was a big weekend for former ND coaches. Washington upset Stanford in the "Battle for Ty Dillingham's Final Buyout Payment". But there was even bigger news for former Irish coach Bob Davis. Coach Davis apparently has followed in fellow ESPN analyst Craig James' footsteps and run for office. He's now king of a newly born nation that they're calling New Mexico.
