2013 Week 15
December 10, 2013
Championship weekend is finally over and we're almost to my favorite time of year, bowel season. I usually prep for bowel season with baked beans and prune juice, but this year I might switch things up as we have the option to have caviar every night up here.
I've heard from some of you asking about who I've seen around here from my television days. Well, I have had the pleasure of spending a fair amount of time with ABC legend Roone Arledge as well as my former colleague Dave Diles. Those of you who think that I've met up with people from ESPN have to look at those actuarial tables, the folks there are a lot younger than I was, born in the 20th century even.
I will say that I've gotten some inside scoop about some of my ESPN colleagues. Let's just say that Skip Bayless probably should work on inventing immortality, because he's not going to enjoy what's awaiting him when he passes on. Apparently Nick Satan's father has a special section reserved for everyone associated with "First Take".
The Conference championship games started out with a bang, as the St. Louisville Cardinals knocked off Cincinnati in the new American Conference, which apparently is a professional sports league. Tough year for the Bengals.
Early on Saturday there was an exciting finish in Stillwater, as Oklahoma State bowed to Oklahoma and lost out on the Big Eight championship. Staying in the Southwest, Baylor blew past Texas 30-10 and won the SWC for the first time since Grant Teaff was coach.
Saturday night featured a pretty fascinating Big Ten title game, as Ohio State lost to the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas, 34-24. MSU, behind its stout defense, is going to their first Rose Bowel in a quarter century, while the R Ban Meyer's 24-game winning streak was snapped about as badly as the last g-string I wore.
There were also some exciting non-conference games. Florida State split their squads, with their regular team upending Duke 45-7 and their backup players having a slightly tougher time with the University of Texas at Houston State. Better luck next time to U.T.A.H. State.
The Stanford Indians blew out the Arizona State Sun Devils, once again demonstrating the superiority of the Pac-8 to the WAC.
The most exciting non-conference game of the day was probably Auburn's 59-42 victory over Missouri in a battle of Tigers. It gets pretty confusing when two teams with the same nickname are in the same league, so it's unfortunate that Auburn and LSU are in the SEC. At least the Missouri Tigers are in the Big Eight.
In another week or so I expect to have my bowel preview completed. You won't believe some of the crap I've dug up this year. See you soon!
