2015 Week 6

October 20, 2015

Whoa nellie, we just got through this season's most exciting week of college football.

Everyone has been talking about the ending of the Michigan vs Michigan State showdown in Ann Arbor. The game ended when the Fighting Chippewas picked up a bobbled snap and ran it back for a game-winning touchdown as time expired.

College football fans everywhere were stunned and excited by the turn of events. I personally witnessed Coach Schembechler punch every TV in our lounge. Meanwhile his good friend Coach Hayes kept on challenging him to punch the lights and throw some chairs around, saying "you're losing it, Bo, living up here has made you soft". Finally the two of them started wrestling on the ground until Woody had a gastric event that caused Bo to faint.

Speaking of Big Ten legends, people ask me what JoePa's up to. I've been here three years and still haven't seen him around. His Nittany Lions were pounded by the Buckeyes, 38-10 as Ohio State finally seems to be turning things around after what some describe as a disappointing 7-0 start.

Elsewhere in the Midwest, Notre Dame pulled away from archrival Southern Cal, 41-31. Athletic Director Pat Haden Fox did a great job returning to the sidelines for the Trojans after his legendary tenure at Minnesota State.

One of the other big games involved a surprisingly undefeated Memphis team. They pulled away from another one of these La Tech type foreign teams, something called Ole Miss. Based on the video I saw, I'd guess the school got the name "Ole Miss" due to their defensive players shouting "Ole" then missing their tackling assignment as if the Memphis team was a bunch of charging bulls.

Alabama came into State College Station and laid a licking on Texas A&M, 41-23. That's another tough loss for the Horns. It's been an interesting year for many teams in the Lone Star State. UT has struggled a lot and Texas Tech only beat Kansas by 10 points after several high schools beat the Jayhawks by 40.

The state of Texas does have three undefeated highly rated teams, all of whom had big non-conference victories last Saturday. Baylor had little trouble with Western Virginia, winning 62-38. TCU had a strong second half to take down Iowa State 45-21. And the University of Texas at Houston had a big win over Arizona State, 34-18. Baylor, TCU, and U.T.A.H. are right behind Ohio State in the polls.

In the Big Eight Oklahoma recovered from their loss to Texas by annihilating Kansas City State, 55-0. I haven't seen an Oklahoman score like that since the KCSU I Felta Thigh house was visited by Brad Pitt.

One of the strangest games was played in Athens. Georgia and Missouri went to overtime after a scoreless regulation. Now I'm still trying to figure out these overtime rules. I guess some games are now adopting an NHL style format, as the Bulldogs and Tigers had a field goal shootout, with Georgia making 3 of 5 to win the game 9-6.

Elsewhere below the Mason-Dixon line we saw quite a showdown in Baton Rouge. Coach Miles went crazy again and the Bayou Bengals faked a field goal to break a 4th quarter tie and turn back the Gators, 35-28. That gives LSU an edge in the SEC South.

Next Saturday is one of my favorites of the year, Tennessee visits Alabama so that means it's the third weekend of October. See you soon.
