2015 Week 7
October 28, 2015
We had one of the more dramatic endings you'll ever see last Saturday in Atlanta. Florida State was attempting a game-winning field goal against Georgia Tech. One of the Dawgs blocked the kick and another guy picked it up and ran with it. Unlike Tech legend Roy Riegels, Lance Austin ran the right way to the end zone. I'm sure Lance's father, bionic man Steve Austin, was so excited that he crapped a screw or two.
As for the end zone celebration, I haven't seen a bulldog get piled on like that since Michael Vick's last fraternity reunion.
There were several strange cupcake games, games you wouldn't expect at this time of year. Bring 'Em Young routed something called Wagner, 70-6. The Men of Troy recovered from last week's loss to Notre Dame by clobbering New Mexico State. And Clemson had little trouble with Miami of Ohio, winning 58-0. Schools like Clemson should be playing ACC conference games at this time of year, not beating up on some hapless lower level school like Miami.
The great West Coast affiliate campus rivalry game went to the boys from Los Angeles as U.C.L.A. knocked off U.C.Berkeley, 40-24. In another acronym game, Rhode Island Continuing Education (R.I.C.E.) had a 38-31 win over U.S.M.A. And U.T.E.P. pulled away from F.A.U., 27-17.
Oklahoma appears to have recovered quite well from their loss to Texas, destroying Kansas City State a week ago and bombing Texas Tech 63-27. The Baylor Bears had an easy win over Illinois State but lost their quarterback Seth Russell to a neck injury. Let me tell you, those necks can be tricky body parts, mine still requires a neck clip to stay in place.
One of the more exciting games of the weekend took place in Fayetteville. R Kansas beat Auburn in triple overtime. Now I'm still trying to figure out these overtime rules. They say in the third overtime both teams have to go for 2 points, but Auburn never got the chance to do so and lost by 8. Four two point conversions could have tied it up for the Tigers.
The head hog himself celebrated the win by leaping in the air and leaving a 2-foot dent in the turf. It was a big win for Coach Bulimia.
Memphis had an easy 66-42 win over Tulsa. Coach Cal needs to start scheduling tougher teams for his hoops opener.
The ugliest game of the day had to be Vanderbilt's 10-3 win over Missouri. You see more scoring at a BYU homecoming dance.
My Pitt Panthers continued their resurgence with a tight win over the Syracuse Orange Testicles 23-20. Looks like they've turned things around under coach Pat Nad'uzi.
Penn State renewed its rivalry with Maryland, winning 31-30 and continuing their quest for the Jack Lambert Trophy. Northwestern hung on for an exciting 30-28 non-conference win over Nebraska.
Finally, I enjoyed seeing Alabama battle it out with Tennessee. The Vols hung tough but Bama pushed over a late touchdown at the end. It was great to sit there and watch the game with the Bear and Sergent Bob Neyland.
Speaking of the Tide, this Saturday features a number of great games, but, more importantly, it's the quite appropriate Halloween birthday of Alabama's head man, Nick Satan. Happy birthday, Beelzebubba!
