2017 Week 8

October 25, 2017

We had some big-name matchups on Saturday, we had a huge group together to watch the contests, but the games themselves were huge blowouts.

In the late afternoon game Alabama hosted Tennessee. Former LSU QB Bert Jones is really struggling this year with the Vols. Nick Satan's boys worked their black magic and the game was over almost before it started as the Tide cruised to a 31-7 victory. Coach Bryant just sat back chucking to himself while watching, trying to be polite by not rubbing the result in Sergeant Bob Neyland's face.

The greatest intersectional rivalry took center stage that evening, as Notre Dame took the field against Southern Cal and waltzed to an easy 49-14 victory. Coach B Kelly looked happy. I haven't seen an Irishman rip a Trojan like that since John O'Holmes' film debut.

After the game Coach Parseghian told Coach McKay that the game reminded him of the 1977 clash when Notre Dame came out wearing green jerseys and put a hurtin' on USC. Coach McKay then started talking about Anthony Davis. Then Coach Ara mentioned OJ and cutlery, and pretty soon we had to separate them.

In the other big night game, host Penn State sliced through Michigan's defense with ease on their way to a 42-13 blowout win. Coach Schembechler wasn't happy with the result, but he didn't have to worry about any coach talking trash to him as JoePa wasn't around. We haven't seen JoePa anywhere up here, I'm really starting to wonder what's going on.

There were a number of far more exciting games. Western Virginia held on for a narrow triumph over the winless Baylor Bears. Rutgers won a scintillating battle against Purdue, 14-12. My Pitt Panthers had a late rally to take one from Duke, 24-17.

The St Louisville Cardinals batted around against Florida State, winning 31-28 on a late field goal. It's been a tough year for FSU.

My daughter Beth Cook apparently spent last Saturday hanging around something called "North Carolina T&A". I don't know why that girl keeps getting mixed up with these adult type places.

Arizona had a double overtime win over regular Cal, 45-44. Now I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules. Teams are supposed to go for 2 in the third overtime but Cal did so in the second overtime while Arizona just kicked the extra point.

I would like to apologize for an error I made last week. Back then I said that Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate is the son of former Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate. That actually is incorrect. Khalil is actually the son of one of Dick Rodriguez's former quarterbacks at Michigan, Tate Forcier. That would make Khalil the nephew of Forcier's brother Golden Tate.

Elsewhere in the Grand Canyon state, Arizona State had a blowout win at the University of Texas at Houston, 30-10. Coach Snyder seems to have the Sun Devils rolling. I still remember his initial struggles in Tempe after moving over from Kansas City State.

In the SEC Louisiana State won big at Ole Southern Miss, 40-24. Meanwhile Auburn went out of conference and had a blowout win against 2-5 R Kansas. I suspect Razorback Coach Butthead is going to be on the hot seat soon, though I'm not sure whether he'll be able to feel it through all that blubber.

This coming weekend we have some bigtime matchups, including North Carolina State at Notre Dame, UCLA at Washington, and the World's Largest Cocktail Party, also known as "any Ohio State home game" as Penn State comes to Columbus. See you next week!
