2021 Week 10

November 9, 2021

We've finally gotten into November with a bunch of exciting conference races, the BS rankings coming out every week, and lots of MACtion. They should have MACtion all season long. You had a couple great high scoring affairs with Eastern Michigan upending cross-state foe Toledo 52-49 and Kent State beating Northern Illinois 52-47. Elsewhere Seaman U beat rival Western Michigan 42-30 thanks to two long punt returns for TDs by Kalil Pimpleton. I predict Mr. Pimpleton will win the Biletnikoff Award and sign an NIL deal with Clearasil.

We are at the time of year when we have coach farewell tours, that's when coaches who are retiring or are being forced to retire get to make the rounds. For instance, TCU upended SWC foe Baylor 30-28 as part of Coach Chris Peterson's farewell tour. Up next for Coach is a trip to visit Xenu.

Coach Ogre, in his final go-around with the LSU fighting Tigers, saw his team put up a great effort against Alabama, but they came up short, 20-14. A last minute Hail Mary was, predictably, denied by Satan.

In the Big Ten the Purdue Spoilermakers lived up to their reputation, knocking off previously undefeated Michigan State 40-29, thanks in part to a wild trick play where a running back took a handoff, tossed it to a wide receiver, who lateraled it to a quarterback, who then threw it back to the running back for a touchdown. I haven't seen a three-way score like that since Emanuelle Part VIII.

One of the more exciting finishes occurred in Cincinnati as the home team beat Tulsa 28-20 on a couple goal line stands. Now I'm still a bit confused about these overtime rules. Tulsa got stopped on their try, then Cincinnati fumbled the ball, so it should have been a new OT and Cincinnati's turn to start. Instead they gave it back to Tulsa and they failed to score again. It must have been a mix of college and NFL OT rules since the game involved the Bengals.

Elsewhere in games involving highly rated Huckeye state teams Ohio State held off the Nebraska Cornholio, 26-17. Fortunately Ohio State kicked a late FG to keep Coach Frost from having yet another one-score loss.

In the SEC South Carolina blasted the Florida Gators 40-17. I'm not saying Coach Mullen is in trouble, but I heard people in Gainesville, hoping for the return of a once again beloved former coach, have been scouring Florida Bay looking for the sexiest sharks.

Tennessee narrowly defeated rival Kentucky, 45-42 to retain possession of the Golden Tooth.

In the ACC North Carolina staged a big comeback to defeat Wake Forest, 58-55. Someone suggested that the final sounded like an ACC basketball score, but ACC basketball teams rarely score 50 points.

The biggest controversy of the week involved the Washington vs Oregon game which Oregon won 26-16. Early in the game, following a Washington cheap shot by Ruperake Fuavai, Huskie coach Jimmy Lake cuffed Fuavai on the sideline and has now been suspended for one game.

I spoke to my good friend Coach Hayes about the incident. He was extremely offended by Coach Lake's actions. Woody said "that's just an embarrassment to the profession. You ALWAYS step into a swing like that, you don't do it off your hind leg. And using a piece of laminated paper? If you want to send a message to a player you use a clipboard - I didn't carry one on the sideline for notes, I carried it to help me communicate with my players. One good whack with a clipboard was more informative than 100 chalk talks."

We've got some big matchups coming up this weekend: conference games like Michigan at Penn State, Mississippi State at Auburn, and the battle for the farming services of Floyd Rosedale between Minnesota and Iowa. But we also have some great non-conference tilts, like Oklahoma at Baylor and New Mexico State at Alabama. Should be a great time!
