2021 Week 11
November 15, 2021
I'd like to start off by noting some of the oddities of college football when we start letting international teams like La Tech into the mix. For instance, the game between Clemson and Yukon featured the following score at one point.

Now at first I figured Yukon had just kicked an extra point. But then I remember that they are a Canadian team and Canadian football has some odd things like 7-point touchdown and clocks stopping after every play as if every Canadian game was a Fox Sports telecast. Canada also has this odd thing called a rouge which is some weird one point thing that Canadian coaches like to talk about but nobody understands.
Anyway, apparently Yukon scored a rouge, probably while they had 12 men on the field and everyone running around in motion. Unfortunately they were going to need a few dozen more rouges to overcome Clemson so that was that.
In other games, there were some humdingers in the Big Ten. Iowa reclaimed Floyd Rosedale and his fine farming services by knocking off Coach Boat at the Minnesota Golden Buffaloes, 27-22. Michigan scored a late touchdown to defeat Penn State 21-17. And the Ohio State Huckeyes scored early on Purdue as often as most guys do with my daughter Beth Cook, at least before the period ends.
My Pitt Panthers had an impressive win over Carolina, 30-23 in overtime. Meanwhile Boston University came back to pass by a game Georgia Tech team, 41-30.
In the South the Ole Southern Miss State Fighting Pirates trailed Auburn 28-3 then went on a 40-0 run that probably had Coach Rick Leach thinking of his glory days playing in Anne Arbor against teams like Wake Forest. Florida had a stirring comeback themselves, dominating the second half against Stanford and winning going away, 70-52.
Florida State scored a late TD to take down Miami, 31-28. My good friend Coach Bowden was asleep during the game then saw the final score and started yelling like "WIDE RIGHT CAN KISS MY ASS" like a madman. I had to tell him that the winning play was not a field goal. That didn't deter him, he still kept on yelling it. I think he's still a bit traumatized from the early 90's.
There were some great intersectional games. Ole Southern Miss ground out an impressive win over Texas A&M, 29-19. Also of note, Baylor had a great defensive performance in their 27-14 win over previously unbeaten Oklahoma.
Elsewhere in the SWC/Big 8 showdowns, Texas Tech stunned Iowa State with a line drive 62-yard field goal at the gun. I haven't seen something involving Lubbock fly so low to the ground since Clear Lake, Iowa in 1959.
Finally I'd like to salute the Kansas Jayhawks. They had an exciting win over Texas, 57-56 in overtime. Now I'm still not sure about these overtime rules. Texas went first and scored but were allowed to kick the extra point, then Kansas scored and for some reason went for two even though that's not done until the third overtime. Anyway, the Jayhawks converted and their fans went wild. Gotta love college football, weird overtime rules, wild celebrations of a 2-8 record, and expectations that the best is yet to come.
Yes, the best: I'm talking about cupcake week in the SEC, with SEC powers squaring off against weak sisters like Charleston Southern, Prairie View, Louisiana Monroe, and Missouri. Should be fantastic action!
