2023 Week 3

September 19, 2023

We are FINALLY nearing the end of cupcake season, well except for the second to last week in November when SEC powers play high school teams. Even exhibition baseball is more compelling than A&M blowing out former directional school Louisiana Monroe or South Alabama destroying a weak lower level foe like Oklahoma State.

My Panthers lost yet another Backdoor Brawl to Western Virginia, 17-6. Johnny and I just grabbed the remote, changed channels, and had another drink.

Elsewhere in the Big East, Boston College made a valiant comeback in Chestnut Hill against Florida State, but came up a couple points short. Frodo U has made a remarkable turnaround since reinstating football a few years ago.

Iowa State has had some very good seasons under coach Dan Campbell, even their losses show some great potential. Last weekend the Cyclones ventured to Ohio and fought hard but lost 10-7. That was an impressive defensive effort against the Buckeyes.

Elsewhere in the Midwest Notre Dame stayed unbeaten with an easy win over Seaman U. I'm not sure why Notre Dame keeps playing the Navel Academy.

In the same old same old category, a highly rated Tennessee team went down to the Swamp and got thumped. Coach Superior is famous for saying "you can't spell 'Citrus' without 'UT'." I'd add "you can't spell 'dumbass Phil Fulmer' without 'Phil'."

Also in the SEC LSU had little trouble with Mississippi State. Top ranked Georgia survived a scare from South Carolina as they scored 3 TDs in the second half against the Cocks.

Bring 'Em Young went east and had an exciting win over R Kansas, 38-31. In another long road trip, Florida International flew over the seas and up to the Klondike and beat Yukon, 24-17.

In other foreign action, North Texas held off the Fighting Frenchmen of La Tech, 40-37. New Mexico State topped New Mexico, 27-17 to claim the crown of the best team from South of the Border.

The University of Washington Huskies flew east and annihilated Michigan State 41-7. They had over 700 yards of total offense including well over 500 through the air. I haven't seen a Penix penetrate Spartan Dawgs like that since that MSU guy was caught with the basset hounds.

I was a bit flummoxed when I saw that Miami had scored 48 times on my daughter Beth Cook last Thursday. But I was even more surprised to watch Missouri rally late to kick a 61-yard field goal to beat Kansas City State - in the box score it mentioned Mizzou had a quarterback "B Cook".

Then later I found out B stood for "Brady". I'm not going to put down my daughter but I had assumed Tom Brady generally has done better than that in the lady department. Hopefully my grandson Brady has a fine season for the Tigers and makes his papa proud. And his mama, if she finds a moment to get off the mattress.

The most exciting game of the day lasted until the wee hours of the morning as Colorado came from behind to defeat cross-state rival Colorado State, 43-35. Coach Prime Directive has been doing a lot of things to generate publicity for his team but I think he went too far when he tried to get the Golden Buffalo to mate with the CSU Ram.

Well the cupcakes are mostly over and we've got some great matchups next weekend: UCLA going to the Loan Star State to play the University of Texas at Houston, Ole Southern Miss against Satan's minions in Tuscaloosa, and the great sociological experiment as the Buckeye fan base visits South Bend. Talk to you soon.
