2024 Week 10

November 5, 2024

We had some great matchups this past weekend.

Ohio State went into State College Station, spotted the home team 10 points, then came back to win 20-13. Meanwhile Oregon went to Anne Arbor and jumped all over the Wolverines in the first half then cruised to a 38-17 victory. Both host teams tried very odd goal line plays that ended in failure. Michigan's try involved a reverse pass that led to the receiver getting clotheslined by a camera and Penn State's three failed goal line plays each involved a 300 pound lineman running back and forth across the formation. I haven't seen such futile attempts to score involving a fat guy since Coach Butthead Bulimia's date with Erin Andrews.

Georgia scored late to beat back an upstart Florida team in the World's Largest Cocktail Party, 34-20, before 75,000 drunken fans, many of whom did not get tased or slugged by the authorities.

Elsewhere in the SEC, Tennessee beat Kentucky 28-18 to retain possession of The Golden Tooth. Mississippi State had their SEC Cupcake Week game early, beating back the Papists from UMass by a 45-20 margin.

Oklahoma had its own cupcake win, as they defeated Maine 59-14. If the Sooners are going to start scheduling weak November opponents they may as well join the SEC. Or also schedule New Hampshire and Vermont and join the Yankee Conference.

Army continued to be undefeated as they had little trouble with Air Force, winning 20-3. The Black Knights are off to their best start in a generation as they head toward a showdown at Yankee Stadium against Notre Dame. I can still remember those 1930's and 40's games between those two foes, played in the House that Ruth belched, broadcast by Bill Stern. Those were some of my favorite memories of my middle aged years.

Sadly, Pitt's dreams of an undefeated season went up in smoke at Gerald Q Ford Stadium in Dallas as SMU pounded my Panthers 48-25. I wonder how much the Pony enjoyed the game. Has anyone seen the Pony?

The St. Louisville Cardinals upset an improving Clemson team, 33-21. Also in the Palmetto State, South Carolina crushed Texas A&M 44-20, which will make it difficult for the Aggies to make the BS playoffs. Apparently the BS playoff rankings come out tonight, which I guess means we'll learn who is in the 12 team field and can relax and watch a month's worth of what are effectively exhibition games before the playoffs and bowels get flowing.

Among teams that have no chance at any BS this year, Wisconsin got clobbered by Iowa as the Huckeyes will keep the bronzed bull scrotum nicknamed the Hartland Trophy. Florida State fell to 1-8 after another big loss to North Carolina. And Southern Cal lost to Washington 26-21 to fall further back in the Pac-8 standings.

Finally, I'd like to note that today is a very important day for our nation, one of the most important Tuesdays in a long time. We often talk about our disagreements, about how we don't like the people in leadership roles, and we often take no action and just continue to complain. But tonight we'll have a much clearer idea of what the future entails. We hear so much about blue states and red states and how they're at each other's throats and I'm looking forward to sitting back and watching the coverage tonight - as Boweling Green from red state Ohio visits Central Michigan of blue state fame as we begin one of the most important few days of the year, November MACtion.
