2024 Week 9
October 29, 2024
I want to start out this week by once again talking up my Pitt Panthers. They're now 7-0 for the first since 1982 when I was just an octogenarian. They beat the seed out of the Syracuse Orange Testicle, 41-13, with the game being highlighted by three pick sixes thrown by Syracuse QB Kyle McCord. I haven't seen so many wounded ducks resulting in scoring since that crossover Elmer Fudd/Huey, Dewey, and Louie adult film.
Surprising Vanderbilt had yet another exciting game as they hosted Texas. Sadly the Commodes came up a bit short, 27-24, but they're still having a great season.
Notre Dame renewed one of their long-time rivalries and really stuck it to previously undefeated Navy, 51-14. The Midshipmen turned it over 6 times, the way they let go of the balls you'd think it was a greased up Rod Jeremy or something.
One of the more exciting battles was down in State College Station. Texas A&M switched quarterbacks to freshman Marcel Reed and came back on LSU, winning 38-23. Combined with the Texas win in Nashville I think there's now a lot of great bragging rights for the SWC against the SEC.
Ohio State had a tough battle against a reinvigorated Nebraska team, coming from behind to win 21-17 at home. Ohio State is headed for a showdown at Penn State this weekend and I for one would love to sit with Coaches Hayes and Paterno and dissect that one. Except I haven't seen JoePa since I got here. And nobody wants to talk about it so I'm still mystified as to his location.
Among the smaller schools I'd like to congratulate new D-1 team Kennesaw State for their first win as they upended previously unbeaten Liberty 27-24 last Wednesday. That's what I love about college football - stunning upsets by schools I never heard of played during the middle of the week in front of 3,000 fans.
There were a few fine intra-state games this weekend. Miami and Florida State resumed their epic rivalry with the Canes being the latest team to run all over the Seminoles, winning 36-14.
Michigan ended a two game losing streak by defeating the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas, 24-17. I wasn't paying close attention but the announcers were pretty excited about some orgy in the end zone. The last time I heard someone mention that particular topic it was Coach Corso saying "my bachelor party involved an orgy in my end zone". I still don't understand Lee at times.
One of the great cross-town rivalries, right up there with UCLA vs USC, was renewed last Saturday as the University of Houston came from behind to beat nearby rival the University of Texas at Houston 17-14. That's a great win for the Cougars over U.T.A.H.
Not all the great rivalry games were intra-state. Kansas fought valiantly but lost to Missouri's Kansas City State, 29-27.
I'm pretty fired up for next weekend, not just the OSU/PSU game but there's #1 Oregon at Michigan, USC at Washington, and the world's biggest cocktail party when Georgia visits Florida at their FU Gator Bowel. Should be great!
