2024 Week 15
December 9, 2024
Well, we've finally wrapped up the regular season, except for the Army vs Navy game. Unfortunately, due to the length of the season and the late Thanksgiving, Army vs. Navy will be played during bowel season, when all eyes will shift away from two teams with a combined 19-4 record to the classic 6-6 vs 6-6 bowel matchups being played in Montgomery Alabama and Frisco Texas.
We just got past conference championship weekend but there weren't a lot of conference title games. Army went to 11-1 with a big 35-14 win over Tulane to win the Atlantic 10 title. Western Kentucky got blown out in Jacksonville 52-12. I guess the Jaguars got relegated from the AFC to the Sun Belt. Boyes' State ground out a 21-7 win over Nevada Las Vegas to win the Mountain West title game.
While last weekend used to be exclusively conference championship weekend, things have changed a bit and we saw some intriguing crossover matchups that ended up being great games as well.
Oregon jumped out to a big early lead but then had to hang on for dear life against Penn State, winning 45-37 to complete an undefeated regular season. I think it's great that, with all these teams making the BS playoffs and being distracted from traditional bowel matchups, they found a way to match up the Pac-8 winner and the Big 10 winner. Though I'm not sure why they played the game in a warehouse in Indianapolis.
Arizona State had a big win over Iowa State 45-19 in a matchup of the WAC and the Big 8. The winners were led by burly running back Cam Skattebo, who had 3 touchdowns and over 200 yards total offense. I haven't seen a Satanic Sun Devil Worshiper score on teenagers like that since Jimmy Page.
There was a hum dinger in Atlanta as Georgia beat Texas in overtime, 22-19. Now this time the Bulldogs didn't have to go 8 overtimes and there was no 2-point shootout. Instead the teams kept kicking field goals, both in regulation and in overtime, and Georgia got two and the Horns just one. It was an impressive performance by the Southeastern Conference against the champion of the Southwest Conference.
I guess the ACC has been shifted down to being a lesser conference because their champion, Clemson, ended up playing the Southwest Conference runner-up, Southern Methodist. SMU made a valiant comeback to tie the game very late before Clemson combined a long kickoff return and a pass to set up a game-winning field goal. I'm sure the Pony was disappointed. Has anyone seen the Pony?
So we're finally ready for the best part of the year, bowel season. I'll be working very hard the next few days getting my bowel preview ready. I look forward to digging deeply into the bowels and showing all of you what I can find. Talk to you soon!
